Reading Senior Center November Schedule

Below is a run-down of all the happenings at the Reading Senior Center in the month of November.

Free transportation within Reading is available for many programs. Please call 781-942-6794 to inquire.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND PRESENTATIONS:

  • Bereavement Support Group- Wednesday, Nov., 2 & 16 - 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Lounge.

Whether your loss is recent or resurfacing, come check out this new group and find comfort with others. The program will be staffed by the VNA of Middlesex East; facilitated by Irma Meuse, SP, and L.I.C.S.W. the Bereavement Coordinator has many years experience helping people with all the complex feelings that accompany loss. Drop-ins are welcome. The group will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month.

  • Mind Body Integration - Tuesday, Nov. 8, 10:15 a.m.. Lounge.

Jackie Pearlman, Director of Admissions, from Radius Health Care Center in Danvers, MA would like to welcome Reading residents to learn about therapeutic programs for cognitively impaired residents. We will discuss techniques designed to maximize functionality, increase independence and provide a higher quality of life.

  • Coffee Social - Wednesday, Nov. 9 – 9:30 a.m. Lounge.

Please join us for a drop-in Coffee Hour with great company and delicious donuts. Take a moment to visit with old friends and meet new ones – we have some fascinating folks in this town with experiences and stories to share along with a few good laughs. Don’t miss it!

  • Revere Beach Slideshow - Tuesday, Nov. 15 - 10:15 a.m. Lounge.

Sponsored by Salter Health Care. The program features a one hour presentation and description of more than 100 beautiful images of historic Revere Beach and its glorious past. We will share and relive with your audience our collective memories of the rich history of Revere Beach in its heyday! Additionally, we will arrange a collection of oversized photos in the meeting room for viewers to preview along with background music to set the tone.

  • Manicures - Friday, Nov., 10 - 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Arts & Crafts Rm.

Licensed Manicurist. $5.00 or $6.00 French. Call 781-942-6794 to schedule a half-hour appointment.

  • Facials - Tuesday, Nov., 8 & 22 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Arts & Crafts Room.

Both relaxing and rejuvenating - men and women can enjoy a spa-quality facial from a Licensed Master Esthetician. Be good to your skin! Choose 15 minutes for $5 or 30 minutes for $10. Call 781-942-6794 to schedule your appointment.

  • Thanksgiving Special Lunch - Tuesday, Nov., 17 - noon.

Join us for a delicious lunch and entertainment by one of our favorites – Jim Moses. Suggested donation for lunch is $1.50 for seniors. The cost for everyone else is $3.

  • Lunchtime Birthday Party - Monday, Nov. 21 - 12:00 p.m. Great Rm.

Birthdays are good for you; the more you have, the longer
you live. If you have a birthday in November, tell the receptionist when you reserve. Your meal is free, and we have a gift for you. For everyone else the suggested donation for lunch is $1.50.

  • Movie - The Social Network, Monday, Nov. 21 12:45 p.m. Lounge.

The Social Network 2010 - 120 minutes Director David Fincher's biographical drama chronicles the meteoric rise of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) from Harvard sophomore to Internet superstar, examining his relationships with co-founder Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake). Winning Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Director, the film also racked up Oscar nods in the same categories and for lead actor Eisenberg. You won’t want to miss this!   • Special Dessert and open discussion with Senator Clark– Tuesday, Nov. 22 12:00 p.m. Lounge.

Please join Senator Katherine Clark as she provides Apple Crisp and an open discussion for the members of the Reading Senior Center community.

  • Your Blood Pressure: What everyone needs to know Tuesday, November 29 - 10:15 a.m. Lounge.

Would you like to learn more about your blood pressure? Join Candace Quigley, Registered Dietitian, from Mystic Valley Elder Services to learn what your blood pressure numbers should be, how to lower your blood pressure naturally and the effects of high blood pressure on your body.

  • HEALTH AND WELLNESS Zumba Monday, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Great Rm.

Join the party and help us welcome our new instructor,
Kelli! Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program that you will love. Zumba is fun...it's the type of exercise you'll want to do every day and feel good about doing it! $4/session.

  • Motion to Music - Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Great Rm.

Total Body Workout with aerobics, weight training, and stretching. $15/month, Drop-ins $3/session.

  • B.E.S.T. - Balance, Energy, Strength, Training - Friday, 9:00 a.m. Lounge.

$2/session. Join this fun, chair-based class and work toward strong bones, energized muscles, and better balance.

  • Yoga - Wednesday, Nov. 2, Thursday, Nov. 10, Nov. 16, 30 - 9:30 -10:30 a.m. Great Rm.

4 weeks for $32 or $10 for drop-in. No Yoga on Nov. 23. Great Rm.

  • Tai Chi - Monday, 2:00 p.m. 

$5/class for drop-in.

  • Podiatry Clinic - Monday, Nov. 14th - Noon - 6:00 p.m. Arts & Crafts Rm.

Call Dr. Connolly directly at 781-438-2525 to schedule an appt. The cost is $30 for a Senior Center visit and $50 for a home visit. NOTE: Regretfully, we can no longer provide transportation solely for this program. If you need a ride to see Dr. Connolly, you are welcome to request a ride in for lunch, see the doctor, and then receive a ride home at either 12:45 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. You are welcome to bring your own food or share in our lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50. If you would like to order a meal, please call the Senior Center at least 1 day in advance. 781-942-6794.

OTHER NOTES:

  • Regular Health Screenings, Blood Pressure Check

Reading’s Public Health Nurse is available for blood pressure checks and general wellness questions. This is a great opportunity to keep an eye on your blood pressure and talk to the nurse about methods to keep it in a healthy range. Thursday, November 10th: Tannerville

SENIOR GROUPS:

  • Not Too Stuffy Book Group - Thursday, Nov. 17, 1:00 p.m. Lounge.

Title: The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. Cassandra is lost, alone and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident ten years ago, feels like she has lost everything dear to her. But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.

  • Alzheimer’s/Memory Loss Caregivers’ Group - Thursday, November 10 -1:30 p.m. Lounge.

These support sessions are for caregivers of people with memory loss. Participation is open to anyone currently living with a person who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and/or dementia. We have arranged for a guest speaker presenting CARING FOR THE CAREGIVER. In giving your loved one the best care, is by also taking care of yourself. Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

  • Computer Classes

Learn to use email, send pictures, or use the internet to look up your ancestors, medical conditions, vacation spots, news, anything. And it’s all FREE too!

  • Klickity Klack Group - Every Wed. 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Arts & Crafts Rm.

Come join this drop-in group to knit and crochet. Make a hat, sweater, or afghan to donate to those in need or for your own use. All levels of expertise are invited. Donations of needles, yarns, and patterns are always welcome to use or share
