Reading Teacher Leads Students to Help Flood Victims

Elena Gourlis of Reading, a Science teacher at Boston College High School, assisted by Huy Huynh of the BC High Campus Ministry, led eleven BC High student volunteers on a service trip last April vacation to Logan, West Virginia.

They began the week at the Wheeling Jesuit University.  Through WJU’s Appalachian Institute, the group was connected with different service groups all over the state.  Most of the week was spent in Logan, West Virginia.

Gourlis and her students, along with hundreds of other volunteers from all over the country, teamed up to respond to the immediate needs of the severely flooded Logan community.

“Through this experience of service to others,” said Huynh, “and connecting with those most in need, their understanding of the Jesuit motto ‘men and women for others’ has deepened, been enriched, and they are forever changed.”

This coming spring BC High will sponsor Service & Justice Immersion trips to El Salvador, The Dominican Republic, Wheeling West Virginia and Camden, New Jersey.

Boston College High School is a Jesuit, Catholic, college-preparatory school for young men founded in 1863.  The school enrolls approximately 1600 students from more than 100 communities in eastern Massachusetts. For more http://www.bchigh.edu
