Candidates For 2012 Local Election Finalized

The deadline to return nomination papers to run for office in the 2012 Local Election passed on Tuesday.

The deadline to return nomination papers to the Town Clerk in order to run for office in Reading’s 2012 Local Election came and went on Tuesday, and while the field for the open seat on the Board of Selectmen has been narrowed to just two candidates a new race for a seat on the Board of Assessors has emerged.

With the 2012 Local Election ballot now set, a three-way race for two seats on the Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) Board of Commissioners is also on the horizon.

Last fall Board of Selectmen Chairman Camille Anthony announced she wouldn’t be seeking reelection after 18 years, and subsequently pulled papers seeking election to a seat on the Board of Assessors vacated by the retirement of Robert Nordstrand after 42 years of service.

Anthony will be challenged by Robert J. Quinn of Benton Circle.

The battle to fill Anthony’s seat on the Board of Selectmen initially looked like a potential three-way dogfight as three residents pulled nomination papers, but following the decision of Karl Weld not to run, the field has thinned to John Arena of Francis Drive and Karen Gately Herrick of Dividence Road.

Both incumbents on the RMLD Board of Commissioners, Richard Hahn and Mary Ellen O’Neill, pulled reelection papers and they will be challenged by Marsie K. West.

School Committee member David Michaud announced during a December meeting that he would not be seeking reelection, creating a vacancy in that body. Incumbent Chris Caruso is seeking reelection, while former School Committee member Robert Spadafora is looking to fill Michaud’s seat.

Alice Collins and Andrew Grimes are both seeking spots on the Library Board of Trustees.

Alan Foulds is seeking reelection as Town Moderator.

Reading’s 2012 Local Election will be held on March 6, with all precincts voting at Hawkes Field House at Reading Memorial High School.

The election will be held in tandem with the state’s Republican Presidential Primary, following a 2011 decision by the Board of Selectmen to combine the two.
