WRAP:
The Bulldogs ended a forgettable five game stretch in an appropriate fashion as they were no hit by the Andre Chief’s Rob Machado (nine strikeouts) in a 4-0 defeat. This is the second time in a five day stretch that the Bulldogs went into the final inning of a game hitless.
In the five game losing streak the Bulldogs have hit .138 and only scored 4 runs.
“We are getting good pitching every game but when you are hitting like we are right now you have to execute every play on defense and we haven’t” said Coach Matt Morrison, “teams are moving around the bases on us without the benefit of hits too often”.
Andre jumped out to a lead in the first inning on a two-out single by Pete Copa after a hit batter and fielders choice. When newly signed Chief’s catcher, Chad Conner pounded a homerun well over the left field fence to make it 2-0, it had the feel of a much larger lead.
“Two runs might as well been twenty tonight the way we were swinging the bats against Machado” Morrison said.
The Bulldogs only real threat came in the sixth inning when Brett Flutie and the Bulldogs leading hitter Alex Fischer received walks. With the tying runs on base Steve Buitkus hit the hardest ball Reading would hit all night, but, as luck would have it, the ball hit Machado’s foot on the way up the middle and bounced towards first where the play was easily made for the out.
The Chiefs added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take any steam out of the Bulldog hopes on two doubles and a sacrifice fly by the career home run leader in the Intercity League, Justin Crisafulli. Machado then finished off his night by striking out the side for the second time on the evening.
“We have the weekend off, but we will try to get some hitting in and we should be getting some of our regulars back that have been out, hopefully we can turn it around starting with Tuesday at home, there is a long season left” Morrison said.
