WRAP:

The Bulldogs had a disappointing afternoon at Morton Field as the first place and four time
defending champion Lexington Blue Sox flexed their pitching muscle in route to a pair of impressive wins, 5-0 and 4-1.

The Blue Sox rolled out their top two aces, Matt Karis (2010 ICL Pitcher of the Year) and Southborough’s Drew Brzozowski, and Reading was unable to push a run home until there were two out in the last inning of the second game. Lexington has now won 8 games in a row, and in their three games this week, allowed just one run and four hits.

In the first game, the teams were scoreless through three innings and the Bulldogs had the best threat to that point when they left Steve Buitkus stranded at third base with only one out.

In the fourth inning the Blue Sox pieced together four runs which left the Bulldogs a mountain to climb with the way Karis was pitching.

The league’s leading hitter and Northeastern baseball coach, Justin Wright, was in the middle of the rally as he was all day (six hits), and came home with the first run on a sacrifice fly by former Rocket Steve Gath. The Bulldogs had a chance to limit the damage to two runs but did not take advantage of two Blue Sox running miscues which could have ended the inning. Instead Tommy Haugh and Karis knocked home two more deflating runs.

Karis finished off the Bulldogs in quick fashion after that, getting stronger as the game progressed and allowing just three hits while walking no batters.

In the second game of the twin bill, the Blue Sox continued their momentum by plating three runs in the first two innings to put the Bulldogs in the precarious position of having to put up multiple runs against one of the league’s best hurlers, in Brzozowski.

Again it was Wright who started the rally with a double and was brought home with two outs by Matt McEvoy from Holy Cross, followed by Haugh’s rbi single.

Gath who caught both ends of the doubleheader scored two runs and had two hits on the day, added the insurance runs for the Blue Sox later in the game.

Meanwhile, Brzozowski did not allow a hit and only two base runners until Bulldog Trevor Manzi (two hits on the day) singled to start the seventh inning. The Bulldogs then added some unexpected drama after two hit batters and a walk brought the winning run to the plate.

However, Andy Gagnon’s fly ball out to left field ended the long afternoon for the Bulldogs.
