Car Crashes Into Walker Brook Drive Starbucks

Driver cited for operating to endanger in mid-morning crash.

9:22 a.m. on a Sunday is normally a time when the Starbucks on Walker Brook Drive in Reading is filled with customers enjoying their morning coffee and pastry.

Given the timing, its remarkable that no one was injured when a car slammed through the side of the building, causing significant damage.

According to a Reading Police spokesman, the driver was pulling into a parking space on the side of the building when he hit the accelerator instead of the brake. As a result, the car jumped the curb and crashed through the windows.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was also uninjured but he has been cited for driving to endanger.

The Reading Building Inspector was at the scene Sunday afternoon to make sure the building was structurally sound. An article appearing on boston.cbslocal.com quoted a Reading Fire Department Capt. Philip Boisvert as saying the building passed inspection and the Starbucks would be able to re-open as soon as cleanup was completed.

In the meantime, a sign was posted at the Walker Brook Drive location, reminding customers that the Starbucks on Main Street in Reading was open.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt or killed. There should be safety posts installed similar to the ones at Cumberland Farms.

Paul, very good point made by you. Does Reading have building safety inspector? How about all of the businesses on Haven St where you can pull up just as close as at SB's?......do they have the safety posts you mention?....I believe not. I believe Reading used its allotment of granite posts on the route 28 throughway....of which there are fewer and fewer.................

Ron, I couldn't believe it when I saw the picture. I haven't been to the Starbucks when someone hasn't been either sitting there waiting for their coffee, or working while enjoying their purchase. It it very lucky someone wasn't injured or killed.

That wouldn't have happened if Joe Veno was still regulating the parking lots and crosswalks throughout Reading...those were the days.
