Five Things, Including a Call for Service Nominations

Today is Wednesday, Aug. 31. Here are five things you need to know:

The windows will be open at school. As your little students trundle off to their first day of school, they will likely be heading for classrooms with open windows. With temperatures slated to reach the low 80s and more than 20 people packed into each classroom, they’re going to need some kind of ventilation.

We still REALLY need your help. is slated to focus on people who serve the town in one fashion or another and deserve some recognition for their service. Unlike earlier Patch Picks columns, where we supplemented anemic responses with selections from other towns, we can’t do that with this one. If you don’t make some suggestions, we’ll have to scrap the column for this week.

A shortcut on comments. A reader told me last night that she sometimes has trouble tracking the comments when conversations got particularly rapid-fire. She winds up scrolling to the bottom of our shout bar, then clicking read more, she said. Well, if you just want to see what your neighbors are saying, you can skip the scrolling and go to reading.patch.com/people.

And five decades later, eCars came to Reading. On this day in 1955, William Cobb of General Motors demonstrated the world’s first solar-powered car. Since then, solar powered cars have turned into something of a perennial science fair project, but, with vehicles like beginning to enter the market, maybe we’ll see a consumer solar car before long.
