The North Reading Police Department, in conjunction with AAA, suggests the following safety tips for a fun filled Halloween.
“BE BRIGHT ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT”
SEE AND BE SEEN
- Be bright on Halloween night! Carry a flashlight
- Use reflective tape or stickers on your costume or treat bags
- Masks can block your vision. Use non – toxic face paint instead
- Costumes and shoes should fit well to prevent trips and falls
- Costume accessories should be soft and flexible, not sharp and pointy
ROAD RULES
- Look all ways and listen for traffic before crossing
- Cross at corners, not between parked cars
- If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic
- Walk, don’t run
- Use caution when crossing driveways
- Obey traffic signals
- Go with a group and bring a trusted adult
Families are welcome to come by the North Reading Police Station for free Halloween bags.

We really should have set hours for trick-or-treating in North Reading. Not sure why they have never been instituted, but I would think 6-8 p.m. would be plenty of time. Instead, we have kids straggling to our door sometime after 9 p.m. Why not set hours?
