Harrows is Bringing Chicken Pies to Dedham
Dedham will get the chance to eat the same chicken pies that Reading residents have enjoyed since 1935.
Harrows Chicken Pies has been serving the residents of Reading since 1935. Now Dedham will get the chance to taste the pies that have kept the family business thriving.
"We've been in Reading since 1935 and we wanted to see if other areas would work for us," Wally Arsenault, Co-Owner of the restaurant said. "We like that Dedham is a very busy area and is a family driven community. And chicken pie is something that would be good for any family meal."
The restaurant was originally owned by Charlie Harrow. Walter Arsenault started working at the shop when he was a kid in the 40's before he purchased the business with his wife Shirley in the 50s. Now their sons, Wally and Dan Arsenault, own the business together.
"It's mostly the same ingredients," Arsenault said. "We just had to modify some ingredients since we had to remove the MSG and trans fat. But it still tastes as great as it did then."
The restaurant will offer both hot and cold chicken pies to purchase.
"We have families who like to bake it fresh at home, but we also have those who need something right away," Arsenault said. "So we wanted to make sure that we offered both options.
The restaurant is a bit different from others because it's not a sit-down facility, everything is take-out.
When customers arrive they will have their choice of having an all white meat pie or a white meat pie with vegetables. And there will be the choice of purchasing one, two, four or six serving size pies. The restaurant will also serve fresh apple pies and rolls for purchase to go along with the orders.
"We're a little unusual because we limit our menu," Arsenault said. "But we like to stick with one item and be the best at that."
The owners are hoping to open their doors by the first week of January at 810 Providence Hwy, in the plaza where the Bed Bath & Beyond is located. All of the pies for the Dedham store will be made in Reading.
"I want Dedham to experience comfort food made the old fashion way," Arsenault said. "Still made by hand with fresh ingredients."
