Is Market Basket Moving Out of Reading?

Reading residents want to know if the grocery store plans to move to another town.

Welcome to You Ask...Patch Answers where we answer readers questions. We recently received questions about the Market Basket in Reading. Patch readers want to know if the grocery store is moving. Here's your answer.

Rumors about the Market Basket in Reading have been circulating around town. Residents heard that the grocery store is moving to Wakefield. However, Assistant Manager Mark Lambert said that they are not moving, and do not have any plans to move in the future.

”We're doing business as usual,” Lambert said.

Operations Manager David McLean confirmed Lambert's answer and said that the store is staying put in Reading.

"It's a rumor that has no basis," McLean said.

McLean was not able to comment on the duration of the store's current lease.

A similar rumor about the store closing was spread in 2011, and later squashed with this Patch article.

Given the relative crowds at each store, I would sooner believe Stop and Shop is moving, or, that Market Basket would (wisely) take over the Shaws locations in either Stoneham and/or Wakefield, should either ever become available. I have not heard any rumors about MB moving at all.

In any event, if MB moves I will follow it...

Stop & Shop is looking at a possible strike. Both Stop & Shop and Shaw's are over priced...

If S&S were to leave Reading, I guarantee that MB could take over that store and it would be just as crazy. I just want to get in on an IPO.

Joe & Dave, for your own edification, we live in the United States. South/North America are rather large continents on our planet. 'Merica

Why does the Patch keep resurrecting these ridiculous rumors about Market Basket - rumors which apparently only the Patch hears? Is Stop & Shop a sponsor?
