Police Log: Police Raid Underage Drinking Parties
A look at notable events in the Reading Police log for March 4-5.
Friday, March 4
3:02 a.m. An officer noted new graffiti sprayed across the window of O'Dea’s Barber Shop on Haven Street.
8:29 a.m. An officer noted that the door at the Get In Shape for Women on Main Street appeared to have been tampered with.
10:18 a.m. Police issued a citation to Jose Guzman, 30, of Lynn charging him with driving with a suspended license.
10:51 a.m. Police responded to a minor two-vehicle collision between a Woburn driver and a Reading driver near the intersection of Main Street and Salem Street. Neither driver suffered an injury.
1:40 p.m. A North Reading resident reported that his black female Sharpei, “Maya,” had gone missing the previous day.
4:32 p.m. An anonymous caller reported an ongoing problem with people parking in the handicapped parking space at the Chadwick Arms complex on Lakeview Avenue. The caller said that the complex’s management refused to do anything.
4:48 p.m. Police gave a Reading woman advice on dealing with a restraining order.
5:10 p.m. Following a traffic stop, police issued a citation to Skoba Conte, 36, of Peabody charging the driver with driving an uninsured vehicle with a revoked registration. Police had the vehicle towed.
5:25 p.m. A Lawrence resident reported spotting a woman who appeared to be intoxicated walking near the intersection of Lowell Street and Linden Street. An office located the woman and took her into protective custody.
5:59 p.m. An officer spoke to a man who had been spotted crying while walking along Salem Street. The man reported he had just had a verbal argument with a woman.
6:27 p.m. An Ash Street resident reported that her ex-boyfriend was harassing her.
6:31 p.m. A Wakefield woman reported that someone stole her coat, phone and car keys while she was at the Burbank YMCA.
6:48 p.m. An officer checked the area near the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue and Prescott Avenue for suspicious activity.
7:42 p.m. A Rice Road resident reported spotting what he thought was a coyote in his back yard. An officer checked the area and saw no coyotes.
7:48 p.m. The Reading Fire Department responded to an alarm on Old Farm Road that was caused by burnt food.
8:31 p.m. An officer issued a citation to Nicholas Varga, 18, of Salem, N.H. charging him with driving with a suspended license and failure to obey a red light.
10:34 p.m. Police responded to a report of an underage drinking party on Summer Avenue. Police notified the parents of the children found at the party and also notified the children's schools.
Saturday, March 5
12:00 a.m. Police received a report of a 16-year-old intoxicated youth on Fairchild Drive. The youth’s mother said she would take the child to Winchester Hospital.
12:16 a.m. Police responded to a Bancroft Avenue home where the homeowner discovered youths drinking during her daughter’s party. Police released the youths into their parents’ custody.
12:36 a.m. An officer spotted a Reading man behind the Shell station on Walkers Brook Drive. The officer sent the man, who was talking on his cell phone, on his way.
2:00 a.m. Police issued a citation to Demeatres Fontaine, 24, of Dorchester charging him with driving an uninsured vehicle with a revoked registration, an expired inspection sticker and the wrong license plates attached. An officer took the driver to the station to allow him to make arrangements for a taxi.
6:09 a.m. A Hopkins Street resident reported an ongoing problem with a vehicle idling in the Sam’s Bistro parking lot. An officer checked the building, and found that the car belonged to a cleaner who was warming up his vehicle before leaving work.
8:38 a.m. Police spoke with a Pearl Street resident about an ongoing problem with a barking dog.
12:08 p.m. Police received a complaint about a woman walking a dog in Laurel Hill Cemetery. An officer advised her of the complaint, and she left.
12:43 p.m. Police responded to a two-vehicle collision between a Reading driver and a North Reading driver near 1462 Main Street.
5:00 p.m. Police received a report of a man yelling at “someone or something in the backseat” of his vehicle while he was parked at the Home Goods at 1342 Main Street. He then got in his car and drove south. An officer checked the area and was unable to locate the car.
7:41 p.m. Police responded to the Dunkin Donuts at 454 Main Street where a caller reported two possibly-drunk customers. An officer spoke with both and found no issues.
9:50 p.m. An anonymous caller reported spotting a large black bag in the middle of the road near the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue and Victoria Avenue. An officer placed the bag on the side of the road and asked the Department of Public Works to pick it up on Monday.
10:13 p.m. Police arrested a 17-year-old youth and charged him with driving while under the influence of alcohol, being a minor in possession of alcohol. The arresting officer also issued a citation to an 18-year-old passenger for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana.
10:18 p.m. An officer issued a citation to an Andover man for possession less than one ounce of marijuana after the officer found Ross behind the Burbank Ice Arena on Symonds Way.
