Police Log: Reading Fire Tackles Chimney Blaze

1:17 a.m. An officer noted new graffiti on a “Do Not Enter” sign at Birch Meadow Elementary School.
8:23 a.m. A Bond Street resident reported receiving a scam letter in the mail. An officer called the number on the letter and found that it seemed to come from a collections agency. The officer anticipated that the agency would not follow up further.
12:57 p.m. A caller reported ten bags of recyclables left by the road on Arcadia Avenue. A Selfridge Road resident admitted to leaving the bags there, and agreed to retrieve the bags if the recycling company did not pick them up.
3:12 p.m. Dispatch forwarded a report of a dead squirrel on Eaton Street to the animal control officer.
3:45 p.m. A caller reported finding a blue bicycle on a Gavin Circle lawn.
6:52 p.m. Los Angeles police reported that they identified an Indianapolis man who was suspected in a two-year-old assault case at an Occupy Los Angeles demonstration.
8:51 p.m. Following up on an earlier case, an officer charged Michael Powers, 24, of Reading with larceny of more than $250 and forgery.
9:01 p.m. Reading police and fire responded to a chimney fire at a Grove Street property. The fire department extinguished the flames.
