Reading Town Meeting voted Monday night to withdraw from the Civil Service process, moving the hiring, promoting and disciplining of future police officers and superior officers up to the town. Some residents and Town Meeting members supported this, but several were against it. Read about their opinions here.

Why should someone else decide who gets hired in Reading. My wife got hired by the Post Office and was sent to Gloucester. How's that for fitting in?

Reading Police have been under Civil Service for over 50 years, there was never a problem that I am aware of. I was a memeber of the Reading P.D. for over 30 years and enjoyed working there. Why was it an issue for the P.D. being uner civil service and not the Fire dept. which will retain civil service ? The Police Officers should have been offered some form of tenure. I futher have been informed that officers hired going forward will be reappointed every 3 years ( this is what is being told around town) ?
The vote carried with the P.D. membership by only 1 vote from what i was told

Hmm, Sounds like somebodys Brother, Son, Brother In-law, or Political contributor couldn't pass the civil service test. It will be interesting to see who the new hires or promotions will be.
