POLL: What Is North Reading's Biggest Claim to Fame?
Take our poll and let us know what you think.
Every week we poll our readers to find out what they think about a certain topic. Today we want to know what North Reading's claim to fame is.
Ipswich River Park, North Reading's Zip Trip, Kitty's, Horseshoe Grille, Ryers and President Barack Obama's Chief Speechwriter Jon Favreau have put North Reading on the map, but what is the town's most popular claim to fame?
Take our poll and let us know what you think. If you don't see your answer, choose the "other" option and tell us in the comments section below.

North Reading Public School System. We are always rated one of the best in MCAS and our students are leading very successful lives due to the education they have received here in North Reading. Now let's give our students new/renovated school buildings that match up to the great education they are receiving. Come to one of the forums around town to learn more about this project.

I would love to see NR get a new high and middle school...but at 96 MILLION!!!! No way!!! What are we going to be Newton part 2. People need to get their heads around costs and bring this into a respectful level. For heavens sake, our enrollment is not that large to warrant these costs.
As you know, it's the residents of NR that support over 87% of the towns costs. And why this? Because the weak selectman in town do not have the courage or understanding to split the tax rate and finally bring these commercial locations up to proper valuation and now they're shoving a 96MILLION school down our throats.
The town needs to get its act together first before they ever think of trying to build Newton North number 2

The stereopticon...humble, yet ground breaking...wouldn't have our new fangled 3D televisions and movies (or anything that came in between all this,) without it...it really did change the way we see the world.

Maybe if I went to every town in Massachusetts like zip trip I would get more respect. I am only delivering the news in the #1 market in America; I suppose it is my fault for thinking that is at least comparable to a couple of buildings holding liquor license!

Hi Sean,
I hope you are well. I am so sorry that you were not included in this poll. I did not know that you were from North Reading. I would love to write a profile about you. Please let me know if you would consider a short phone interview.
Thank you for reading North Reading Patch!

Although 1860's Rock Star George Frederick Root and Barry Kipnes were both great answers, I had to delete those comments. Please use your real, full name when commenting on our site. Thank you!

Did Barry Kipnes get deleted? Another vote for Barry Kipnes who's contributions to the town stretched beyond the basketball courts. The example he showed through the commitment to his craft, his guidance, and personal attention helped build strength and confidence in youths throughout the community.
The censorship on this scientific poll gets zero votes.

How is George Frederick Root not a legitimate vote? I would expect a news organization with the current headline of "Woman Reports Eggs in Mailbox" to have a little more journalistic integrity.

Klaus, All I said is no need to get nasty. I will take the high road and say, You are entitled to your opinion. But I must ask, Why the negative comment about Ryers?
Klaus Kubierschy

Why the negative comment about Ryer's? Because Ryer's stood for what North Reading was all about. Hometown values and kids on bicycles up to their usual hijinx. Now? Might as well call the place Las North Vegas Reading. Nothing but traffic lights and Hollywood. Where did the old North Reading go Joe Veno? Goobs knows what I'm talking about. Don't you Goobs? Tell 'em how it used to be.
PS - How is Harold Parker not on this list? I guess Andover claims that? I always knew I should've moderated Andover instead. 3,000 acres of the most beautiful Hemlock White pine the eye has ever seen, and we're talking about Zip Zap or whatever it is.

klaus, I also lived here when there was only one traffic light in town. So I know how it used to be. But it is what it is and like it or not the Town has grown a lot in the past 65 years.

Would you look at this thing?? They even have an internets sight: http://ryersstore.com/
This is too much! Old man Ryer has an internets sights??? Do they have a Twiddor and MySpace too??? Why don't we just tear down the Bacheldor School and build a state-of-the-art McSchool in it's ashes while we're at it....oh WAIT.

And Klaus, have you seen what they've done with the drive in theater? it's a defunct Stop & Shop now. And don't get me started with the redemption center....looks like Times Square! There was a time when a man could breath in this town, before all the hubbub and glitz and glam. Any high school parties this weekend?

Please - Zip Trip claim to fame?? What are you talking about. Why would someone get sucked into falling under the spell of a quasi news program on a reactionary TV Station.
The things that say North Reading to me are: The Memorial Day Parade and the Veterans' Day Ceremony on the Common. Those two events are what makes North Reading special

I agree with Mary B. I personally love the small town spirit that is evident in both of these long time traditions. I love how the whole town is involved in the Memorial Day PArade! Veterans' DAy is very special in honoring our heros, I only wish more people and businesses observed this special day.

Re. Chris' comment.
We actually do need a new High School and a new Middle School. Both facilities are inadequate for CURRENT enrollment, let alone future enrollment. Although I would say that the HS is well maintained, it is simply too small. And I would give credit to those who maintain the buildings for working so well with what we have.
As far as splitting the tax rate, NR offers very little incentive to businesses that want to move here. That would only make it more difficult to attract quality businesses and make it virtually impossible for the small businesses we do have to survive.
If NR wants to split the tax rate, they need to offer something of value and do what Wilmington did on Rt. 38 and hook 28 up to sewer. At least that would likely attract businesses that generally overlook us as most don't want to deal with septic systems and all that goes with them. Wilmington is doing a great job attracting quality businesses/restaurants, there is no reason for NR not to be able to do the same.

I guess I spent a bit to much time at the Hill or else I would know this, but is the North Reading section of Concord Street tied up to sewers? If it is not how hard would it be to do that for the same reason that Route 28 should be tied up.

I would think Klaus Kubierschky would know how to spell his own name. He would also know how to spell Batchelder. Then again, I would have assumed that Joe Veno, who's known Klaus for decades, would know that the real Klaus doesn't talk like that.

My vote is for Moynihan Lumber. How else would any thing in N.R. get built. And don't forget, it's where Sean got his start.
People shouldn't comment on Ryers unless they know it was Molleys before.
