Temporary Assistant Principal for Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities Chosen for RMHS
Tom Zaya (current RMHS Health and Wellness Department Chair) will be the interim Assistant Principal for Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities.
Tom Zaya will be the Assistant Principal for Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities at Reading Memorial High School for the next school year. Current Athletic Director Phil Vaccaro's contract was not renewed.
Zaya, current department head for health and wellness, was chosen due to the withdrawal of the chosen finalist for the position. Reading Public Schools decided to suspend their search for the year.
The role of athletic director is now part of the responsibilities for the assistant principal for athletics and extra curricular activities.
"The whole position was restructured," Superintendent John Doherty said.
The assistant principal for athletics and extra curricular activities will not only take on the responsibilities of the former athletic director, but will also oversee the health and wellness department and have involvement in extra curricular activities.
According to Doherty, Zaya’s leadership in health and wellness, combined with his past coaching experience, will be very valuable in his new role.
"I think he will be a great addition to the administrative staff," Doherty said.
Zaya has been a Reading educator for 20 years, but will only assume this new role for one. The new high school principal will have to make the decision on when to begin the search for a replacement, Doherty said.
