The Week Ahead: January 9-13

A look at what's on the docket for this week.

Monday, Jan. 9

  • Go, Christmas tree. This January, Reading is providing two options for . On Saturday, January 14, 2012 residents may take their trees to the Compost Area on Strout Avenue from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (leaves and branches will also be accepted at this time). In addition the contractor will collect Christmas trees curbside on your regular rubbish collection day the week of January 9 – 13, 2012. All decorations, including tinsel, must be removed from the trees. Trees in plastic bags or not completely cleaned of this material will not be picked up or accepted at the Compost Area.
  • Art exhibit. members will exhibit at Frame 1 Shop & Gallery  on Main Street, North Reading.
  • Budget talks. The School Committee meets Monday night to discuss its Fiscal Year 2013 budget. The Reading Finance Committee is also scheduled to attend. Among the items on the agenda is the facilities naming policy—which was held over from Thursday’s meeting—and the start of FY13 budget talks, including an overview, administration cost center and regular day cost center.   • More meetings. Four other councils, boards and committees meet on Monday, including the Council on Aging (Senior Center Game Room, 6:30 p.m.), Board of Library Trustees (Reading Public Library Conference Room, 6:45 p.m.), Cultural Council (RPL, 7:30 p.m.) and the Community Planning and Development Commission (Town Hall Selectmen’s Meeting Room, 7:30 p.m.).
  • Sports. Monday looks to be a slow day on the sporting front, but it won’t be completely bereft of action. For starters, the girls hockey team takes on crosstown rivals at Burbank Arena, with the puck set to drop at 6:30 p.m. The boys swim team is also in action with a road meet at Natick High at 8 p.m. Across town, the girls alpine skiing squad has a meet against North Andover at the Bradford Ski Area at 3:30 p.m. For complete schedules, click here.

Tuesday, Jan. 10

  • First in the nation. The New Hampshire Republican Presidential Primary is Tuesday, and the Reading Republican Town Committee is hosting a at the at 7 p.m.
  • Haitian earthquake talk. Reading residents Ron and Maureen D’Addario talk about their experiences with the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation in the still-recovering nation. is presented by LiveWires – Lifelong Learning in the Library and is sponsored by the Friends of the . This event is free of charge.  Coffee and refreshments are available at 9:30 a.m.
  • Board of Assessors. The Reading Board of Assessors meets Tuesday night in the Town Hall Assessor’s Office. The proceedings begin at 7 p.m.
  • Sports. The basketball squads will both hit the court on Tuesday night, as the Rockets host Middlesex League rivals Belmont. The girls contest gets underway at 5:30 p.m., while the boys tilt tips off at 7 p.m. 

Wednesday, Jan. 11

  • Conservation. The Conservation Commission meets tonight, in the Selectmen’s Meeting Room at the Town Hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Click here to view the full meeting agenda.
  • Sports. The Reading High boys track team faces league foe Arlington on Wednesday at 5 p.m.. The meet is at Arlington High. The girls and boys hockey teams host Belmont at , with the girls getting underway at 6 p.m., while the boys drop the puck at 7:45 p.m. Boys wrestling hits the mat tonight against Lexington at Hawkes Field House, starting at 7 p.m. The girls ski team takes on Masconomet at Bradford Ski Area starting at 3 p.m., while the coed swim team takes on Matignon on the road at 4 p.m. View the complete schedule here.

Thursday, Jan. 12

  • Chat with a selectman. Seniors and others are invited to voice their questions and concerns to Selectman Stephen Goldy on Thursday at noon in the Senior Center’s Great Room. Check the Reading senior newsletter for more details.
  • Sports. The gymnastics squad is in action Thursday, as the Lady Rockets face Woburn at Woburn High at 4:30 p.m., while the girls indoor track squad takes on Arlington High at 5 p.m. in Arlington. 

Friday, Jan. 13

  • Cookies! Reading Girl Scouts will be hosting a on Friday Jan. 13 at Gregory’s on Main Street from 5 – 8 p.m. Be sure to stop by and get your Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Lemonades, Thanks-A-Lot and Shout Outs. America’s favorite cookies are only available until March 9!
  • Sports. The girls and boys basketball teams both face Arlington in league play on Friday night, with both games on the road at Arlington High. The girls start at 5:30 p.m., while the boys game begins at 7 p.m. Boys swimming takes on league foe Winchester at , starting at 8:30 p.m. The hoopsters are in action as well, with the girls playing at home against Cardinal Spellman starting at 6:30 p.m., while the boys face the Cardinals in Brockton at 6:30 p.m.
