There was a lot of discussion after congressional candidate Richard Tisei's Live Chat on Patch. Most people who commented afterward seemed to think he did well and at least answered questions quickly and candidly. But there is one person definitely not impressed -- his opponent, Congressman John Tierney.
In a statement issued this week, Tierney blasted Tisei's Patch performance, accusing him of dodging important questions and issues. It singles out the GOP congressional budget known as the "Ryan Plan" as well as several social issues.
"The simple fact is that Richard Tisei continues to downplay his support for the Republican agenda in Washington. He has said that he wants this campaign to be about the issues," the press release reads. "That presents a challenge for Tisei, because he will not talk about the issues people care about."
Tisei did actually answer questions about the Ryan Plan (he has not taken a difinitive stand on it but says it it a good starting point) and abortion, among other issues.
The press release, in its entirety, reads as follows:
Friday Richard Tisei participated in an online chat at Patch.com. Voters asked questions on very important issues and Tisei dodged questions about his support for the radical agenda of Congressional Republicans.
Tisei was asked if he would support the Ryan Budget, which ends Medicare. Tisei tried to hide his support for the plan by cutting and pasting NRCC talking points. He would only admit that he thought the Ryan Plan was “a good start.” However, Tisei has already praised the Ryan Republican Budget and its approach, gone to receive personal training on it from it’s author, Paul Ryan, taken the maximum legal campaign contribution from Paul Ryan, and benefited from a lavish Washington fundraiser thrown by Ryan and his “Young Guns” Tea Party leadership.
If Tisei were in Congress to vote on the budget he would have either voted with the Young Guns to pass the Ryan Budget or voted with Congressman Tierney in favor of the Democratic alternative. Tisei, a 26-year legislator, knows how legislation gets voted on and yet would not answer very basic questions.
A Patch reader wrote in about the paycheck fairness legislation being considered by congress, and again Tisei could not provide a substantive answer. On a very important issue that affects women across the country, Richard Tisei said that he needs to study the issue.
During the chat, Tisei was asked if he supports federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Instead of giving a simple Yes or No answer, Tisei dodged the question, and would not say if he supports Planned Parenthood and stand up for abortion rights.
The simple fact is that Richard Tisei continues to downplay his support for the Republican agenda in Washington. He has said that he wants this campaign to be about the issues. That presents a challenge for Tisei, because he will not talk about the issues people care about. Members of Congress have to give a Yes or No vote on legislation, including the Ryan Budget.
“Instead of answering these important questions, Tisei tried to hide. When it comes to equal pay, a women’s right to choose, and the Ryan Budget, voters know where John Tierney stands. Voters in the 6th District deserve to know where Tisei stands. Mr. Tisei claims to be a moderate, but what he won’t tell you is that he stands with a right-wing congress that is just plain wrong on these issues,” said Grant Herring the Tierney campaign communications director. “With John Tierney you know what you get: a fighter for middle-class families, a commitment to protect Medicare, and a supporter of women’s health.”

Right now, I'd vote for ANYBODY other than an incumbent in Washington....they have ALL failed the country, Republican and Democrat alike. George, see above for numbers. As for "inaction" from Republicans in the House. They've passed 2 budgets since the mid-term elections. Meanwhile your Democrat friends in the Senate have failed to even introduce a budget, let alone pass one, as they are REQUIRED BY LAW to do for the past 3 years. So who's really the inactive party?

Please take the time to read a few issues of the wall street journal instead of blindly following CNBC. This prescription cures all "liberal media" ills in less than two weeks.
Oh...and when you comment on the patch please have something to say.
For instance... these are statements.
John Tierney is a blow hard that has not authored one piece of legislation during his 16 years in congress. John Tierney has been carrying Ed Markey's bags for 16 years. John Tierney is just waiting to get a "new cool job" as U Lowell dean (sorry that was the other hack Marty Meehan). John Tierney's wife is a felon. Wait....sounds like Nick Mavroulas. Maybe he should keep the seat.
Remember... Mavroules was voted out of office in 1992, the year he was indicted on seventeen counts of corruption amid a federal investigation into alleged misuse of his office for private gain.

The Senate is required to pass a budget resolution as their part of the budget process.
"The congressional budget process provides for the annual adoption of a concurrent
resolution on the budget to serve as a framework for the consideration of budgetary
legislation."
"Section 303(a) of the Budget Act prohibits any spending, revenue, or debt-limit
legislation for the upcoming fiscal year from being considered before a budget resolution has been adopted. The House, however, may consider annual appropriations bills after May 15 if a budget resolution has not been adopted by then."

George, keep up with the facts/news before you shoot from the hips. Following is directly from the Washington Times, May 16, 2012:
"President Obama's budget suffered a second embarrassing defeat Wednesday, when senators voted 99-0 to reject it. Coupled with the House's rejection in March, 414-0, that means Mr. Obama's budget has failed to win a single vote in support this year". Got it...??? Not ONE VOTE, Republican OR DEMOCRAT....not even Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid. Wow, must have been a real winner! In my opinion, sounds like lack of strong leadership from the White House when they cannot get even ONE vote from their liberal legislative friends. Just for the record, the PRESIDENT is the one who first submits a budget, contrary to your prior statement as well that Budgets start in the House. Looks like the "JUNK" budget (your words) you allude to started in the OBAMA WHITE HOUSE. Again, your facts are all wrong. Why am I responding to such nonsense ????? And no, I will not vote for "high cheekbones" Warren, who says "she will help Washington get it straight"....and she cannot even get her heritage straight? Hmmm......

Hi Pete
It's kind of interesting that the Republicans don't propose anything useful. They seem to always be against things - a really negative attitude. About the only thing they seem to be for is more Abuse of the Middle Class by not having Big Corporate America pay their fair share of taxes.
Karl Weld
10:41 am on Friday, June 15, 2012
George, Republicans are for something. You just don't agree with what they're for. For instance, this Republican is for limited government with Constitutionally-enumerated powers. For individual liberty AND responsibility. With that responsibility comes a moral obligation to help those in need, without government coercion (confiscatory, redistributive tax policies). For equality under the law. For equal opportunity, not government-mandated equal outcome. For a free market, free from cronyism, where millions of individuals make individual determinations on what and when to spend money on. Not government-controlled, centrally-planned economic/industrial policy that picks winners and losers.
Now we can debate these issues in good faith, or we can continue to snipe at each other (see: Peter), and use general banalities like "abuse the middle class" and "evil corporations". By all means, defend your positions and beliefs, as I will mine. But at least offer some substantiation for your positions and accusations.
And I will even concede to raising taxes...IF, and only IF, every penny goes to debt reduction. Every. Single. Penny. Because I don't want to leave $16 trillion in debt to my kids and their kids. Because it's the greatest generational theft in the history of the world. And it's also just morally repugnant to me as a parent.
peter lucci
11:23 am on Friday, June 15, 2012
Well I'd have to say that our previous president really got the national debt ball rolling now didn't he? (see: below)
President George W. Bush
Jan. 20, 2001: $5,727,776,738,304.64
Jan. 20, 2009: $10,626,877,048,913.08
Karl Weld
12:04 pm on Friday, June 15, 2012
Yes, he most certainly did. (That's why I can't stand him.)
However:
Jan. 20, 2009: $10,626,877,048,913
June 14, 2012: $15,784,249,348,462
So in 3 1/2 years the current president has increased the debt by roughly the same amount ($5 trillion) that the previous president did in 8 years.
Regardless of party affiliation, these numbers are barf-worthy. And squeezing more tax revenue out of the private sector will not make that number go down significantly. The federal government is spending too much money. Period. The argument should be about what gets cut and by how much.
George Lewis

Didn't say corporations were evel just that they should pay their fair share.
Personally I would like to pay no taxes like GE.
Fortunately I see things differently- I believe in a strong government which looks after their people. Provides good medical care, Security, Education, Clean environment, oppertunity for all to reach their potential, etc.etc.
If Republicans are serious in wanting to reduce the deficite what are they proposing to bring wealth into the country. What new industries are they creating to give us a global advantage? Nothing- the same old-same old
Karl Weld
12:35 pm on Friday, June 15, 2012
So reform the tax code. Don't just raise the rate. Because GE will still end up paying zero in taxes.
I guess this is where we part: I favor a strong civil society that looks after itself, isn't mandated to buy insurance that we don't want or need, has local control over education, with a government that treats everyone as equal under the law, secures the borders defending our sovereignty, provides for the common defense and promotes (not provides) the general welfare. Our Founders' vision of a free society, not Bismarck's vision of a welfare state.

What has to happen is to increase the wealth of the nation. Any fool can cut spending, jobs etc the clever person comes up with a plan to bring $$ into the country.
Karl Weld
12:40 pm on Friday, June 15, 2012
So your plan for increasing the wealth of the nation is to tax more of that wealth away from those who earn it? Where will this money come into the country from, specifically? If you raise investment taxes you are discouraging the investment. Government investment in emerging technologies? Hello, Solyndra et al anyone?
George Lewis
1:43 pm on Friday, June 15, 2012
Hi Karl
If it weren't for the government investing in technology you would be in the backwoods. Where do you think GPS came from? How about the internet?
What about your microwave? Government is the engine that drives the economy!
Spinnoffs from gov projects fuel the private sector. Just last week a private company
sucessfully launched a rocket to the ISS - a spinnoff from NASA.. How about all the medical research sponsored at our great Universities
With respect to Solyndra - you win some you loose some - If you don't try you might as well bury your head in the sand. But eventually we will run out of fossil fuel and need a replacement for our children and grandkids which you are worried about.
With respect to taxes everyone should pay their fair share.
Money comes into the country by creating product /services in the US and selling it to other countries. Decrease the Trade Deficite!
Under Obama this is starting to happen. A number of companies one for example, Caterpiller, is building a new plant in the US to manufacture tractors. I'm sure we'll see more private companies in space exploration bringing in foreign contracts.
With the auto bailout there will be more demand for US cars overseas.
Slash and Burn as the Republicans propose will not get the country moving. Investment in education, infrastructure, new technologies -wind, solar space will move us forward for a better life for our kids.

8:00 pm on Friday, June 15, 2012
George, we elected representatives to represent our interests, not to do "what's right for the people", but to do right for the country. Believe it or not there is a difference. The 2 million+ bureaucrats populating the federal government are not elected and are unaccountable to the people, hence the havoc perpetuated on our economy and personal property rights by the EPA.
As for "how you get there is local" is no longer local since the governor decided that we would follow the national common core standards (which were bankrolled by the Gates Foundation BTW). So Brandon is correct in saying the functionaries at the Department of Education in D.C. will now set the curriculum for Reading's school district. Indeed, we just had to approve a budget with additional funding for the district to revamp the curriculum to the national standards. Which seems kind of silly since Massachusetts students were leading the nation with our own state standards.
E
8:39 am on Saturday, June 16, 2012
Karl,
We all know this shift in education standards was a back room deal between Obama and Patrick to foist new national standards down the throats of states by linking federal funds.
If Obama wins in November there will be a sweet cabinet post in line for Duval don't you think. Especially with the two year stints his cabinet and upper level department appointees enjoy. Punch that ticket and move on to some lobbying position. This is crony capitalism at its finest!!!
1. We already had one of the top education reform systems going here in Massachusetts with MCAS.
2. Adoption of the new federal system just lowered the standards and increased the pork to teachers unions and special interests.
Did Duval act for his personal benefit while kissing Obamas butt? Win...Win for the progressives. Lose....Lose for local governance
Many governors refused this funding and the required new standards. I guess they put their states rights and those of their children first instead of their political aspirations.
