Vote For a Local Person of the Year

Who do you think should be our Person of the Year for 2012?

Earlier this week we asked our readers to nominate a local resident or someone affiliated with Reading or North Reading for Patch's Person of the Year award.

After receiving over 2,000 votes last year, our person of the year in 2011 was Connor Doherty. Doherty is a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Afghanistan from March to October last year.

Here are the nominations we received via email and social media for the Person of the Year for 2012:

  • Coach Frank Carey, coach at NRHS
  • Sarah Lentz, kindergarten teacher at the Barrows School in Reading
  • Lindsay Barnes-Felix, who contributes to and supports the community
  • Arline Lumb Garlington, who works and cares for the elderly

Please cast your vote for one of these people in the comments section below.

Honorable Mention: We received nominations for Victoria Soto, the 27-year-old who died trying to protect her students at Sandy Hook Elementary School during the Newtown shooting. Although she is more than worthy of this award, we are looking for someone who lives or works in Reading or North Reading.

Sarah Lentz. In light of recent events especially, as a parent it's so important to know there is someone there in your child's life everyday making them feel special, loved and safe. I have several children myself yet am still amazed at Sarah's ability to creat such a fun and happy classroom while keeping them all in line at the same time! As my daughter says, she is awesome!

Sarah Lentz is so kind, funny, and energetic - she is amazing! After only meeting her new class briefly at orientation she knew each of their names calling them in one by one on the first day of school! The entire first week my son came home saying "I have the best teacher ever!". Sarah makes learning fun and creates excitement in every activity. We are so lucky to have wonderful teachers like Sarah in our schools!

Frank Carey. Coach Carey has been a positive influence on thousands of NRHS students throughout his 47 year career in education. In the past year he has been honored as the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's Baseball Coach of the year. He was selected by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association as the National High School Coach of the Year and he was inducted into the NHSBCA Hall of Fame. In addition Coach Carey led the Hornets to a Division III State Title (the 5th of his career). He currently stands at 697 career wins; second all-time in state history.

Frank Carey is a North Reading institution and should be the local Person of the Year.

I feel so lucky that Sarah chose teaching as a profession, and even more lucky that my girls have had the special experience of being in her class. Sarah is truly one in a million. I have no doubt that she cares as much about my child's development and growth as I do - and she has the skill and commitment to make every child's time in kindergarten a success. She is warm, funny, loving and understanding. Sarah is a treasure.

OUR VOTE IS FOR SARAH LENTZ!!!! She is our first experience with a teacher in the public school setting and we could not be happier with you. She is simply amazing - a true gift for all of our children. Our daughter LOVES to go to school each and every day and is blossoming into a such a wonderful little girl curious about everything around her. In light of the recent events in CT, you realize more than ever, how precious time is and how important it is for your child to be simply and purely happy. I know that Sarah gives my child and all the other student she has taught and continues to teach, the most happiness a child could ever ask for - I do not want want to go to full day kindergarten because I want to be guaranteed Ms. Lentz for my next three children to come through Barrows School!

All three of my daughters have had Sarah Lentz and each will tell you what a wonderful teacher she is. Sarah is truly one of those people who has made a difference in my girls' lives. They will always look back on their Kindergarten experience with her and say she is someone who inspired them to learn. She goes above and beyond in her profession and it is refreshing to know someone who sincerely loves what they do.

I vote for Sarah Lentz, Kindergarten Teacher at the Barrows School as well, for all the same reasons that Jennifer Calvert Maldonado mentioned. My 8 yr. old had Ms. Lentz and now my 6 yr. old has Ms. Lentz for a Kindergarten Teacher. My 6 yr. old can't wait to go to school everyday just to see Ms. Lentz. Sarah Lentz is a very kind, caring and sensitive person and very devoted to her "Kids". Any child who has had the pleasure of having Ms. Sarah Lentz for a Kindergarten Teacher is the luckiest kid ever. And as a parent I feel lucky as well that both my girls had the pleasure of having her for a teacher. You know a teacher has made a huge impact on your child's life when they have gone off to middle school and on their way home from school stops in the Barrows playground just to say Hi to Ms. Lentz and give her a hug. She is just an amazing and incredible person!

My vote is for Arline !! I for one am glad there are people willing to help those at the other end of the age spectrum. "Elderly" can be a lonely, scary and helpless place. It's comforting to know there will be someone there to do for the people that can't do for themselves.

As kind as it is to be nominated for "Local Person of the Year" in NR Patch, there are many other residents that deserve this nomination and do just as much within our community, if not more, then I do. I truly enjoy giving back to NR and surrounding communities and participating in every way I do. Thank you dearly for this nomination but I personally believe Coach Frank Carey is truly the "Local Person of the Year" in NR. Coach Carey began his career in NR as a teacher. I recall having him as my gym teacher here in NR and his values are carried with me through today. I remember particular moments and conversations that he took the time to have with me as a young rebellious child growing up in NR. Along with his teaching career, generations later are blessed to have him as a coach. And not just a typical coach, but one that instills values, goals and dreams in every child he interacts with. My oldest son participates in his summer baseball school and thinks the world of Coach Carey! My oldest son first met Coach Carey as a coach on the field at a Lynn Spirits Minor League baseball game and to this day can honestly say that the regard each of his players have, each of his admirers have and each of his students have is a very high regard. Coach Carey's success on and off the field is immeasurable to those who have personally gained a piece of their own character merely because of having Coach Carey, at some point, as a part of their lives.

She is a witty, energetic teacher who makes learning fun for her young students, and a fantastic communicator who keeps parents informed of classroom and school happenings through weekly newsletters and frequent emails. More importantly, she has created for her students a friendly, respectful environment that fosters learning and creativity. We are very fortunate to have her!

Sarah Lentz. Every day she helps my son and all of her students to learn phonics, writing, math, and all the other vital parts of the curriculum, in a very short time, and fosters their excitement to learn. Ms. Lentz is helping them make the transition from play-based preschool to curriculum-based elementary school in a way that encourages them to love school all their lives!

Frank Carey has my vote. Any teacher/coach who has logged in more than 40 years working with high school students, bringing home several championships not to mention more than 600 wins is deserving of the Person of the Year. Especially in 2012 when North Reading did not have a "star" player to carry the team, just good old fashioned practice sweat and team working brought the championship title home again to North Reading.

Sarah Lentz is an amazing teacher, loving sister/aunt and the most amazing friend a girl could have. Reading is blessed to have her inspire and teach their children. Her patience, humor and dedication far surpass the expectations of a Reading Public Schools teacher. She exceeds every expectation of the kindergarten parents, is meeting the needs of all her learners and is progressing towards being Teacher of the year!!!!
