What Would You Like to See at the Former Registry Location?

The former Massachusetts Registry location has been vacant since 2007.

The former Registry of Motor Vehicles location on Salem Street in Reading has been vacant since the state moved the local registry branch to Wilmington in 2007.

The 17,500 square-foot space at 273-275 Salem St., is just off the highway and is sandwiched between REI and Dunkin’ Donuts

In its flyer about the property, Boylston Realty listed 202 parking spaces and average daily traffic counts of 14,900 vehicles on Salem Street and 153,022 on Route 95/128.

So, we want to know – what would you like to go at the former Registry location? Does a department store make sense? How about a bargain store? Or would you rather see it become something else?

Let us know in the comments section.

About this column: Visions for Vacancies is when we ask readers what they would like to see go into open storefronts and parcels. Related Topics: Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Reading open storefront, and Visions for Vacancies

Word we have on the EDC is that Trader Joe's has already declined to move into that space because they feel their location in Burlington is too close. Sorry folks.

How about a Methadone clinic since Reading is now the heroine capital of the North Shore?

How about a craft store or a consignment store? There was a grocery store and a department store way back in the 70's.

If you can't get a Trader Joe's try getting their parent company Aldi to open a grocery there. One just opened in Salem NH down the street from me and it is a pretty interesting business model for a small format grocer and great store with very reasonable, family friendly prices for this type of economy.

What we don't need is another restaurant or grocery store. A craft store, a consignment store or a book store would be good. Perhaps something recreational and /or educational like Creative Arts.

Whole foods is coming to Lynnfield, along with a family arcade/entertainment type of business (in the new lifestyle center). I would not consider the Trader Joe's in Burlington, "too close" -- the 6-7 mile as the crow flies distance is not a 10 minute trip, but during 3-7 pm and weekends can tend to be up to 1/2 hour each way due to the horrendous traffic in the mall area & Middlesex turnpike generally.
Book stores, video game arcades, bowling alleys - those are 70's types of businesses that just aren't coming opening up these days (plus there's bowling alleys already in Wakefield, Woburn & No. Reading). It is a great location but a very dumpy building. We don't need more banks, chain restaurants, or nail places.

Perhaps something complimentary to REI -- some type of indoor sports facility (e.g., rock climbing, gymnastics) or some kind of family place geared to kids/teen parties like a Monster Mini Golf, Bonkers, etc.

If we cannot get a Trader Joe's, a good bookstore would be a great addition to the community.

Trader Joe's would be good. I also like the idea of a bookstore, but keep in mind that book sales are way down these days due to the use of Kindles and Nooks. I would imagine that anyone opening a book store these days would be taking a big financial risk on the business.
