Why Are There Trailers In the Old Stop and Shop Parking Lot?

The trailers in the old Stop and Shop parking lot are there temporarily.

Welcome to You Asked...Patch Answers where we answer readers questions. We recently received questions about the trailers in the old Stop and Shop parking lot on Main Street. Patch readers want to know why they are there. Here's your answer.

The trailers in the old Stop and Shop parking lot at 97 Main St., will be there temporarily until they are moved into the trailer park next door.

According to the Community Planning Commission, the trailer park is revamping some of their trailers. There won't be any additions, just replacements.

"Last I heard, they were replacing existing trailers," said Community Planning Administrator Heidi Griffin.

Keiser Homes, based in Maine, is the company replacing the trailers.

There is still no news on what will be going into the vacant Stop and Shop building.

Just think we could of had OSJL up and running in that store by now. But NOOOO the do gooders in town did not want it. Well how do they like looking at what is there now. It is also being used for storage for a project being built in Reading. i guess this is good for local contractors who need space to store materials. NOT !!!

Kristen, I find it interesting that you think a business that would generate traffic should go there. I also believe that OSJL did not come here because in your words "so many people were aginst it". I don not know who you spoke to but 90% of the folks I spoke to wanted it here and that was a lot more than the few who posted on Patch that were against it. I think they felt like why bother. You may like looking at outside storage there if they pay rent. But I do not like to see it.

I'm surprised that S&S didn't rent the space to some of those seasonal stores that only open for the holiday season (Halloween, Christmas, etc.). That said, does anyone know if S&S is in discussions with *anyone* about the space?

I think Eileen has a good point Joe!!! We all know Stop & Shop will do what they want to do with their property. I just hope they keep the town in mind when they make a decision as to what business will occupy that space. I never said that more traffic would be a good thing! I said that would be the down side of OSJL in North Reading!

I do not know why so many people are against Ocean State Job Lots. Even though I may not frequent the place, the one on Route 1 in Saugus is very well maintaind and frankly loks 1000% better than a vacant store.

I personally woul welcom a trhiving business such a Ocean State Job Lots into North REading. The additional shoppers might frequest otyher establishments along Route 28.

Message to Stop and Shop: "PLEASE DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR PROPERTY OTHER THAN ALLOW THE STORAGE OF TRAILERS OR SITTING VACANT> LEASE TO A BONA FIDE BUSINESS. YOUR PROPERTY IS BECOME A BLIGHT ON NORTH READING"

NOTE: I will not ever step foot in the new smaller Stop and Shop! They lost a loyal customer!
People in North Reading should not be so uppity. We are no better than those folks living in Reading, Andover, North Andover, Lynfield etc.

Mary, I couldn't agree with you more. Since OSJL opened their Saugus store, I find myself becoming a semi-regular customer. Although my 1st choice would be a Market Basket or other grocery store, we know that S&S will never let that happen; I'd be perfectly fine with an OSJL.
As far as traffic is concerned, a business, regardless of its type, *wants* more traffic since more traffic means more customers.

Thank you Mary. It is time the do-gooders who do not want OSJL start to hear from people like you. Remember one thing Mary there are not that many against OSJL. But the few on Patch made a lot of noise. Most people in town want it but will not post anything about it.
Fred, As we know you need to have traffic to keep a business going. To bad the original post on the traffic from kristen was deleted. Did you get to read it before it got removed?

We were happy to see OSJL come to Maine and fill a vacant store until we discovered that even though the stores return policy is printed on every receipt the employees and management refuse to exchange or refund what they sell. The lady at the service desk says and I quote: "there is NO exchange policy here". You must watch them everytime you go there, they will charge you for stuff you didn't buy like they did me today. The way they operate the store is criminal, charging for things I didn't buy and not subtract it when called to their attention when cashier #40901 rings it in.

You are lucky you don't have the problem of how to get rid of these scammers. We Mainers don't like to be ripped off and want them sent back to where they came from.

Sorry to hear that Dick but that is not true In Mass. I have returned items with no problem. If you think you had a problem with that cashier next time you are down here in Mass. visiting who ever asked you to post this. try going to Market Basket in Woubrn if you want to deal wiith bad cashiers.

Does anyone know how long the trailers will be there? I'd hate to think that they would scare off all the successful businesses itching to move into that location :^)

Fred. I think it is OSJL storing their goods there that they sell in the Saugus store.
Hey why not? The do-gooders did not want to see an OSJL sign on the building but they don't seem to mind the mess that is there now !..............................hehehe

There are more "trailers" on the lot than there are spaces in the trailer park. These modular units look just like the units they are putting together on the old Atlantic Supermarket site on Haven Street in Reading,

The S&S lot was empty when I drove through last week. Have more appeared this week?

Those are NOT trailers. They are the Modular units for the project on Haven St in reading where the Atlantic was. Isn't it nice we have all kinds of open storage there now because the do-goders did not want to see OSJL there.

Maybe it could become a LUMBER YARD! That's eye appealing!

There's nothing like a vacant now crumbling building (yes I saw the crumble bling brick facade by the front window) to say "Welcome to North Reading".

Not sure but could of our town fathers did something to prevent this when Stop and Shop approached for permits to move locations.

Here we are North Reading once again getting the short end of the stck from international cooperations! Yes, Stop and Shop is owned by Ahold a foreign company.

I'm waiting for the weeds to start growing in the cracks in the asphalt. I asked earlier in this thread: is S&S negotiating with *anyone* at the moment?

Not to my knowledge Fred. Why would anyone even want to try to go in there if they have to be approved by the do-gooders first. There is plenty of other property out there to rent without the harrassment of the North Reading do-gooders....
