Wood End School Principal to Retire in June

Principal Davidson will retire on June 30.

Wood End School Principal Richard Davidson will retire this year on June 30. He submitted a letter to the superintendent a few weeks ago and announced the news to his staff this week.

According to Superintendent John Doherty, the search for Davidson's replacement will begin soon and he hopes to have the new principal start on July 1.

"It's been a wonderful experience here in Reading," Davidson said. "I feel very fortunate."

Davidson has been a principal in town for 25 years working both at the Wood End and Birch Meadow Schools.

When asked if he would look for another position, he said, "Not at this point. I wil look forward to spending more time with my family and hopefully being able to travel a bit more."

He will miss his students, their parents and his staff a great deal, Davidson said.

"Please thank the community for their trust and for their support," he said. "Reading is an outstanding community to raise a family."

I remember when Richard started at the Birch Medow school. Best of luck in your retirement Richard.

When I read this announcement this morning, I must admit it made me cry. Richard Davidson was principal at Birch Meadow school for nearly all the time my three children were in elementary school. I think my oldest daughter was in first grade when he arrived, and my youngest son was in fourth grade when Richard moved over to Wood End. People who know me know that I returned to Birch Meadow after a number of years because I had had a son when I was a bit older, and I was nervous about returning to school. I was grateful that Richard Davidson was still there. He was and is to me the epitome of a elementary school principal. Intellligent, kind, nurturing, patient, yet very firm. He always set the tone at the school, and truly made the children his first priority. My favorite years were those sweet years at Birch Meadow, and my family and I thank Richard Davidson for being such a major part of that time in our lives.

Best wishes to Mr. Davidson. He has been a great mentor for students and a great partner to the entire community. I was a little surprised this past Tuesday when I saw the job posted online. I thought the announcement would come before the job posting but I still wish him the best of luck.

Mr. Davidson was my principal when I was at Birch Meadow, and I loved him! I still remember him trying to pronounce my last name correctly on the first day of school.
