The Varsity basketball team struggled to come out with a win against Newburyport this past Friday night. The final score was 51-41.
For most of the game, both teams competed extremely well. It was a back and forth battle, but unfortunately, the Hornets couldn't capitalize on a few runs.
Senior Captains Lauren Hebert and Lauren Witzgall scored a combined 19 points, Hebert with nine and Witzgall with 10. Along with their strong offensive game, they contributed relentless defensive pressure. These two seniors continue to prove their leadership and talent on and off the court.
Junior Elise Makowski had nine points. Her speed and determination are two determining factors to success for many of the Hornets' games this season. Maiola and Reilly combined scored seven points. North Reading also had some contributions from the bench.
At halftime, the Hornets were down 22-15. Newburyport's Castantini and Leahy were major contributors throughout the first half. To start off the third quarter, the Hornets carried through with a lot of momentum.
With five minutes left in the game, the Hornets brought Newburyport's lead down to three. Shortly after, the Clippers extended their lead to eight, with strong defense and a run that helped them to capture the win.
The Hornets' record on the season is 8-4. They look forward to their next game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Triton Regional High School.
