Why I'm Running For Reading's Board of Selectmen

Why?

I've chosen to run for Selectman this year out of a love of my community. My wife and I have lived in Reading for 30 years and raised three children, who passed thru Christian Cooperative Preschool, Killiam Grade School, Parker Middle School and Reading Memorial High School.  I bring my 33 years of business problem solving experience and communications skills to deliver back to our community a portion of what has provided me and my family.

I want to make our good local government even better. As Selectman, I'll work to establish a standard of continuous improvement in municipal management to increase our responsiveness and enhance customer service, measuring our progress and celebrating our successes.  I've pledged myself to filling our downtown vacancies to enlarge our commercial tax base, delivering new revenue to make additional investments in public safety, our schools and those most in need in the community. In addition, I'll dedicate myself to prudent financial management of Town budgets, preparing for financial challenges in advance to minimize negative impacts while positioning our community for an brighter future.

Thes are not campaign platitudes.  I bring true leadership and a history of business success into the race. I am running as an independent campaign without party affiliation - I am a candidate with my views, open to all ideas,  informed by facts and experience, and unburdened by left or right wing ideology.

Review the attached video from the Feb. 14 Reading—North Reading Chamber of Commerce Candidates Forum. It provides you with with an opportunity to see both candidates for office speak their own words and respond to audience questions.

Please consider coming joining us for our campaign Meet and Greet at Sam's Bistro, Monday evening Feb. 20 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there!

Dunbar: Thanks for raising these questions. Please consider coming by our "Meet & Greet" this 2/20 @ 6:30 to Sam's Bistro to ask directly, or propose these topics for the upcoming debate. I'd love to see both candidates have a chance to respond in a public setting...

Yeah Dunbar, I noticed the absence of those specifics on the Facebook page as well.
Good idea to list it under "Info" or something like that I would think.

Dunbar, There has already been one candidate forum, you can view it here:

Liam: I am running as an independent candidate. "Independent candidate" is not a convenient election-year label - its who I am & how I think. I've been an independent voter for 30+ years. I'll function independently, seeking input from all sides, objectively representing the entire electorate's interests in Town Hall conduct.

My goal as Selectman is to serve the entire community and not appeal to either party. To succeed, I'll need the vote of all who agree that political ideology doesn't belong in our local government.

Mr. Arena's opponent was actively recruited by, and is heartily endorsed and supported by, a sitting member of the BoS.

One can speculate how independent her support for, or opposition to, specific Town policy will actually be.

There's not a lot of room for "independence" anywhere. You either vote yes or no.
End of story.

Isn't that Special! Ben Tafoya publicly endorsing Ms. Herrick! Just what we need. More games to be played by our self-centered Board who are there serving their own needs and not the public. Wake up Reading! Herrick will just be another yes man for the other selectman.
