The Women Celebrating Business and Entertainment expo is May 17.
The Reading-North Reading Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 6th Annual “Women Celebrating” business expo fundraiser on May 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boston/Woburn Hilton Hotel in Woburn. Thirty-five vendors selling items such as handbags, jewelry and clothing will attend. Food from local restaurants such as the Horseshoe Grille, Not Your Average Joe’s, Bertucci’s and more will be available. The event will feature musical entertainment as well as a Zumba dance performance. At the event, local salons Axle Color Studio, Salon 77, Embelleish, Salon Muffie, and Primp at Tiffany’s will each choose a woman to receive a free makeover. A CEO magazine ranks Massachusetts as one of the worst states in the nation for business. Chief Executive Magazine ranked Massachusetts 47th based on a survey of corporate leaders. Survey respondents reported the Bay State is one of the worst for taxation and regulation. The state Republican Party is pointing to the survey and saying that Gov. Deval Patrick and the Democratic-led Legislature are bad for the economy and business. What do you think about Massachusetts’ business climate? Is this a good state in which to do business?

Before 8 a.m. everyday, Jonathan Chen goes to several different fish markets in Boston searching for top quality and fresh fish for his three restaurants. Avana Sushi III, his third restaurant, opened about a month ago in Reading and serves Boston quality sushi in the suburbs. Chen lives in the North End, where another one of his restaurants is located. The first location was opened in Chinatown. He decided to open in Reading after trying sushi at other local restaurants; the fish wasn't fresh enough, he said. "We bring fresh sushi to Reading," he explained.
