Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

About this column:

About this column: Each week, Patch will feature an adoptable pet needing a home from PAWS, an all-volunteer animal welfare organization based in Wakefield, MA. Founded by Esther Nowell in 1982, PAWS responds to animal-related needs in many communities north of Boston. The PAWS service areas includes Wakefield, Lynnfield, Reading, North Reading, Saugus, Stoneham, Woburn, Winchester, and Malden. PAWS' mission is to promote and protect the rights and well-being of all domestic animals and wildlife, and foster a greater understanding of animal welfare and animal rights through education. PAWS receives no local, state or federal funding - the budget is completely funded by membership dues, adoption services, annual fundraising efforts, and kind donations from friends and members.
Chocolates are nice on Valentine’s Day, but we think Shadow the German shepherd mix says I love you even better. She is ten years young, with a special personality that caught everyone’s attention right from the start. When Shadow arrived, she had some serious dental needs (and was most likely in pain). But her friendly nature and her desire to be friends with everyone she met made it clear to all involved that this girl deserved a chance at a life with a new family. With the generous financial help from Poundhounds.org, Shadow received expert and loving care at VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital…
February is Cat Appreciation Month, and I have to tell you, I am not feeling appreciated.  Sure, life is good at my fosters’ house.  They are very nice people with friendly pets who I get along with just fine.  I am happy for the love and warmth they have shown toward me, even when I have been shy and hesitant around them.  Now that I have been here for a while, I am much more relaxed.  I sleep on their beds and am happy to watch television with them.  I even like being patted around my head and neck.  We have become BFFs. However, just because I am happy in my foster home does not mean I …
My name is Landry and having fun is my game. That means I am looking for a home with lots of action, activity, and some other animals. I love toys so I hope you have a good supply of balls, catnip mice, and strings. If you will play laser pointer with me, I will run after that red dot until I fall into an exhausted heap. My foster parents do for me this every night, but you can take a day off occasionally, if you really need to. I should tell you that I adore dogs of all shapes and sizes. I am happy to wrestle and play with them. When we are done, I can snuggle right up as I do with my foster…
The New Year is a time for resolutions and Heather and her brother, Toby, have put finding a new, forever home at the top of their list. When they nap together in the afternoon, they have visions of a new family dancing in their heads. At adoption events, their eyes are wide, sizing up potential adopters. Would you consider a pair of warm and loving cats to start off your New Year on the right track?  Heather is a grey and white Siamese-mix who is super affectionate. She loves to be petted or to snuggle next to you on the couch. She also enjoys her “me- time” and has staked out her favorite …
Late this summer, PAWS (Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society, Inc.) took in a young, pregnant cat we named Juliet. She had three healthy kittens and was an excellent mother. As Juliet was nursing and raising her kittens, however, her foster mom noticed that the young mother cat often seemed uncomfortable; her breathing was fast and shallow. Juliet was also very thin, although she ate with a hearty appetite.  Thinking this was just slow, post-partum recovery, the foster kept an eye on the cat to be sure her symptoms did not get worse. Once the kittens were weaned and adopted out, it was …
Do you like stripes? I do. I am particularly fond of my beautiful tiger markings and the stripes on my elegantly shaped face. You can see why I was named after one of the most beautiful cities in Italy: Florence. And, wait until you meet my daughter, Naples! Yes, at just over a year old, I’m a young mom with 3 kittens, two of which were recently adopted. Now I am looking for a home for myself and for my little girl.  Naples is a wonderful kitten. She is bright, curious, and playful, with the softest coat you have ever felt and the same elegant tiger look that I have.  She loves people. Pet …
Psssst…..Over here! My name is Jetta, and I am a masked bandit who will steal your heart. That is because I am a sweet, funny, eight-month-old girl kitten who is full of capers. I love to dive into any game the kids are playing including legos and anything with a string. My beautiful markings and bushy black tail give me the look of a masked marauder, but in my heart, I really just want to be lounging on your sofa or sprawling in the sun on your rug. I have to rest up after all so I can regain the energy to dash around the house with my brother, Camero. Like the muscle car for which he is …
November is adopt-a-senior cat month and we would like to reintroduce ourselves to you. We are Angel Muse and Mr. Bigglesworth, model senior citizens out to prove that that age is an attitude, not a number. A healthy, thirteen-years young, we can’t figure out why the fuss over those kittens. They may be cute, but we are beautiful. We certainly have energy and affection to match theirs and we focus ours on toys and not the carpets, sofas, and curtains. Think of us as grown-up kittens. What could be better? So are you trying to figure out who is who? I am Angel, the tortie. I am the spokes-cat …
My name is Twitch and I am a sweet, declawed lady with a charming and easy-going nature. I just love, love, love people. I will be the official greeter in the house with a sprawling presentation of my tummy. Okay, if you think that’s a bit over the top, I could just sit next to everyone and hang out. Despite my size (personally I think good things DO come in large packages), I am quite agile and will jump into the spot next to you—the better for us to watch your favorite movie together.  I enjoy having company whether that be human, canine, or feline. Having lived with both cats and dogs, I …
Peppermint may be a funny name for a cat, but when you see my beautiful black and white markings, you will know why they named me after a candy. I like to think they were also thinking of my sweet personality, which, like a sweet minty treat, will grow on you as we get to know each other. Enough about you, let’s talk about me. Not that I am self-centered. On the contrary. I am a girl who likes to be around people and I plan to follow you around during the day, especially if you work on your computer or do a crossword puzzle. I also like to play. who doesn’t?  And sometimes I even like to kick…
Fit, fine and quite divine young tiger male, who is 90 percent pussycat and 10 percent play stalker, seeks a loving home and people to match. I am very receptive to humans, thriving on petting and playing. I have to admit that being picked up is just not my thing. However, I will happily hold paws with you.  Vocal and happy, I will greet you with a chirp and never lose eye contact while we talk. We could share meals together if you like. I will definitely carve time out in my busy week to read the Sunday newspaper with you. If there are already other cats in residence, I would be delighted, …
They call me Gianni and I am a cat who got caught in a rainstorm. I mean, who wants to get their hair wet? Certainly not me. So I stood on the porch of a nice house and meowed until someone noticed me.  he family could not take me inside due to allergies, but they called PAWS for help. I was so happy to get rescued that I jumped right into the arms of the PAWS volunteer who came to fetch me! I really love being inside where it is warm and dry. If you don’t mind, I will talk to you as I follow you around the house. But, if you are too busy, I am fine playing with your other cats. I am told my …
A little about me … I am a very friendly, sweet and inordinately affectionate young girl who runs the gamut from self-playmate, who can entertain herself for hours, to avid snuggle-bug, who seeks out people. Having an affinity for human laps (they make great places to sleep) makes me a desirable companion and a great bed warmer in the cold winter months. I look like a Calico (true) and a Manx (false). At best, I consider myself a faux Manx. Unfortunately, my tail had to be amputated due to traumatic injury. I love this cute bobbed tail they gave me.  It’s like a new short hairdo – washes up …
With the upcoming fall season, nothing shines brighter in New England than football and our much beloved Patriots. That must be why they named me after the Patriots draft pick Stevan Ridley. I am not looking to join the Patriots, but I am looking for a team of my own with a wide receiver who can catch my love and pass it right back with some love of their own for me.  I actually do not know much about football. I am a cat after all. But, I do love to pass an ice cube or two if one happens to fall on the floor. Neither can I pass up the toilet paper roll if it comes into my line of vision. …
Sweet and petite, I am a young lady dressed in elegant black and white who wants to make plans with you. Since my kitten has gone to his new home, I am more interested in the company of humans and now I really want a home for myself. I am not looking for a big party, just a nice comfy life with those I love.  Having my lovely coat brushed is one of my favorite bonding activities. And you can be sure I will remind you by pushing my head against your hands when it is time for some patting or brushing. While I don’t love being picked up, I am good-natured and gentle and won’t complain too much …
My name is Libby and, not to be immodest, I am the cat who would win both miss congeniality andthe pageant crown if I could enter the Miss America Contest. At one year old, I am the perfect combination of beauty and personality. Here are my stats: deep charcoal stripes set against a palette of silver, peach and white. Don’t you just love my striped leg patches?  And my slim figure and elegant face really show off my large, exotic, yellow-green eyes.  I am a shoo-in for the pageant crown.  Don’t you agree?  . Of course, beauty is only fur deep—even with ever-so-soft fur like mine. But, my best…
This week is “Adopt-a-Less Adoptable Pet Week” so we are putting the spotlight on some of our cats that get passed over, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes wonderful cats at PAWS find themselves in second, third, or even fourth place to the frisky kitten, to the exotic looking feline, even to the smoochy lap cat who cannot get enough of his human. Much like the overused expression for “every sock there is a match,” we at PAWS believe that for every cat there is a home. We may just have to dig a little deeper, become a bit more creative in our approach, but a home can be had. That’s what we …
I may have a full figure, but I assure you it goes well with my big heart. So do my gorgeous blue eyes and shiny, white fur. You will be happy to know that I am very self–sufficient. Just give me a little time to settle in and I will mark you as my own. Then, I will seek you out for some attention and maybe the occasional brushing. While not really a lap cat, I do like to cozy up and snuggle in bed. It definitely makes the cold winter nights so much more enjoyable for both of us. Please don’t hold this against me, but I enjoy a little nip from time to time…catnip that is. And while I am not …
I know I look like a big cat in my pictures, but I am actually a small kitty who can fit easily under your chin while I purr up a storm. I am also a brave cat. When I was outside in my foster mom's yard, I protected her deck from other cats. Now I am getting to know some nice indoor cats and I just do not have that old urge to chase them away. Being indoors has definitely mellowed me out.  If I have been a bit testy with other cats, I have always liked people.  I purposely made friends with this nice lady so she would invite me inside because I knew I wanted to be an indoor feline. Yes, I do …
Sugar Panda is a most adorable little black and white boy. With his burley build and wavy coat hair, he looks like a little panda bear. He definitely has a penchant for toes and toys, and he can pretty much play with anything he can get his little paws on. His silly, kitten antics are downright amazing.  At his foster home, Panda is fearless. He does not care how big another cat is when he wants to tussle. For all this bluster, however, this little guy may be a little reserved until he gets to know you. But, throw him a ball or dangle a string and you will soon be his favorite playmate.  At …
