The regular season came to a close last week, and the postseason is now all that remains of the winter sports term. There were several games on the schedule during the past week, but before we get to that, let’s take a look at where the locals wound up in the playoff brackets, with tourney action set to get underway early this week. Basketball RMHS Girls: Really wasn’t a lot of suspense as to which team would wind up with the top seed in the Division II North Sectionals girls bracket, as Reading High’s pristine 20-0 campaign put the matter well beyond question. The top-seeded Lady Rockets …
As we enter the final week of the winter sports term, there is much already settled with regards to final league positions and playoff berths but there are still some matters yet unresolved. Several Reading High teams clinched Middlesex League titles this week, including the girls basketball team, who haven’t shown the slightest hint of a misstep so far this season, and the Rockets boys hockey team—who may have gone from knocking on the door to the Super 8 Tournament to working on it with a battering ram after a huge win over top ten competition last week. Boys basketball are also Middlesex …
Editor's Note: This article was updated with correct wrestling results on Feb. 12 at 6:05 p.m. With the winter term nearing its conclusion, local sports teams from Reading High and Austin Prep are gearing up for the final playoff push and looking to lock up league titles as they race down the home stretch. Here’s a look at how the locals fared last week. Basketball RMHS Girls: With just four regular-season contests remaining, it is looking increasingly unlikely that anyone will be able to spoil the No. 2 Lady Rockets perfect season, as they currently sit at 16-0 and are winning games by an …
RMHS Girls Basketball: The No. 2 Lady Rockets played a pair last week and earned their 14th consecutive win of the year against Winchester on Feb. 3, winning in dominant fashion, 58-22. Before that, however, Reading had to get past Watertown on the road on Jan. 31, something the Lady Rockets accomplished, 67-47. The contest also saw yet another personal milestone reached on the RMHS hardwood this year, as junior guard Olivia Healy tallied her 1,000 point as a Lady Rocket, scoring 27 points in total, while Morgan O’Brien added 10. Reading High is now 14-0 overall, and 6-0 in the Middlesex …
RMHS Boys Swimming: The Rockets edged past Lexington 89-81 on Jan. 26 to claim the Middlesex League title outright for the first time in recent memory. It was Reading’s first win against Lexington since before the 20-year tenure of coach Ken Holbrook. The Rockets are a perfect 11-0 overall, and 5-0 in the ML. Reading was led by co-captain Connor Daly who won the butterfly (56.52) and the breaststroke (1:05.73), while Scott McGinty won the 50 and 100 freestyle events at 22.72 and 50.08 respectively. RMHS Boys Basketball: The Rockets suffered through a challenging week, as they saw a 10-game …
Both basketball squads at Reading Memorial High School (RMHS) are enjoying stellar campaigns so far this season and the boys hockey team is proving to be a tough bunch as well. Last week held plenty of action for the Reading scholastic sports enthusiast to take in, and, without further delay, here's the rundown from around town. BASKETBALL RMHS boys: The Rockets have been on a tear this season, and won their tenth game in row on Jan. 21, downing Woburn 64-53 at Hawkes Field House. Reading is 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the Middlesex League Large School Division and only a narrow loss on opening …
The news that Reading Memorial High School girls soccer coach Mike Sheedy will not be back this fall dominated much of the discussion on these pages last week, but there is much more to talk about concerning Reading’s winter athletes as squads from RMHS and Austin Prep vie for postseason positions with roughly half the season in the books. Not to mention, another member of the Rockets’ boys basketball team reached the 1,000-point plateau, as Kenny Reed hit the milestone against Arlington last week. BASKETBALL RMHS Boys: The Rockets picked up a big win over ML Large rivals Belmont at Hawkes …
With the holidays in the rear-view mirror, Reading’s student-athletes got back to the business of ... well ... taking care of business. BASKETBALL RMHS Boys: Since the heartbreaking one-point loss to Melrose on opening night, Dec. 16, the Rockets have been on a tear. The current ML Large bosses already boasted a four-game winning streak coming into the week, and all they did was add two more to the total, downing Winchester and Lexington on the road. The Rockets have now won six straight games—the last four on the road. Reading beat Winchester 58-47 on Jan. 3, behind the stifling defensive …
Schools may have been on vacation last week, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a full slate of sports action as local teams took part in holiday tournaments throughout the area. Reading Memorial High School sent delegations to the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Wrestling Tournament, the Chelsea Holiday Basketball Tournament and hosted the Ed Burns Classic Hockey Tournament at Burbank Ice Arena, while the Austin Prep Cougars boys hockey team took part in the Kasabuski Christmas Classic Tournament in Saugus. HOCKEY RMHS Boys: The Rockets (3-2-1, 1-0 ML) hosted the four-team Ed Burns Classic …
HOCKEY RMHS boys: After failing to find the net during the first two games of the young season, the Reading High boys hockey team finally found the winning formula this week and recorded wins against Xaverian Brothers and Wilmington High. The Rockets picked a nice time to break the goose egg next to the win column, as they handed the always tough Xaverian Hawks a 3-1 loss on Dec. 19 in a road game. That win doubtless stood the Rockets in good stead for their next game, as wins against Catholic Conference teams are hard enough to come by. Never mind road wins. Either way, Reading would need …
HOCKEY RMHS boys: After battling it out with Middlesex League crossover opponent Melrose on Dec. 14, only to come away from the 2011-12 season opener with a 0-0 draw, the Rockets were looking to right the ship against Burlington (2-0) on Dec. 17. It was not to be, however, as the Red Devils handed Reading its firs loss of the season, a lopsided 6-0 hammering. The Rockets (0-1-1) will face one more road test that, mercifully, also won’t count against them in the league standings, as they travel to face tough Catholic Conference foe Xaverian on Dec. 19. RMHS girls: The Lady Rockets haven’t …
