4th Annual Mike Boyd Open in August

The fourth Mike Boyd Annual Open will take place August 2 at 8 a.m. at the Hillview Country Club.  The golf tournament honors the late Mike Boyd, who was an assistant football coach in Reading. Boyd, a two-time Super Bowl hero in Reading and non-smoker, died from lung cancer when he was only 29. The Mike Boyd Annual Open has raised over $30,000 in the past three years in his name, according to one of the event organizers Erica Kirwan.

“We are so thankful to the entire community for the support. Year-over-year we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown from those who knew Mike (both near and far)," Kirwan said. "We have even received letters from people who have never met Mike, but were inspired by his story and adopted his “Don’t Quit’’ attitude to tackle challenges in their own lives.  It has been an incredible three years and it means a lot to us that so many people come together each year to celebrate Mike's life and keep his memory alive.”

The funds from the previous tournaments were split between four charities: The Reading Scholarship Foundation, Front Row Foundation, the Lung Cancer Alliance and the Mike Boyd Foundation, according to Kirwan. The Mike Boyd Foundation, formed by Boyd's family, has become a registered 501c3 charity so now all of the proceeds from future tournaments will be donated to the Mike Boyd Foundation to advance lung cancer research.

“The Mike Boyd Annual Open is a time for Mike's friends and family to gather in his honor, celebrate his life and enjoy each other's company; a reliable group of golfers and well-wishers has formed, with people traveling from all over in anticipation of good golf and great people," Boyd's sister Melissa said. "Each year, we're humbled by the tremendous turn out and extraordinary good will of the many folks Mike's life touched."
