Reading was ranked No. 19 on a recent list of the 50 safest communities in Massachusetts.

The Safewise.com list, released last week, highlighted Reading's friendliness and opportunities for cultural and recreational experiences. Safewise is a home security review resource.

Sudbury earned the top spot on the list. Newton was ranked No. 38.

"We were particularly impressed that Reading’s schools offer an easy way to report bullying, via an anonymous, online bullying report," said the report. "Educators and townspeople are also investigating the need for an early childhood education center, and the school Superintendent authors an up-to-date, informative blog."

Safewise.com reported the following statistics for Reading:
  • Violent crimes per 1,000 residents: .40
  • Property crimes per 1,000 residents: 7.49

If I'm not mistaken, with the possible exception of Wellesley, Reading is the closest to Boston of these top 20 towns. Not only that, we are in the middle of two interstate highways (escape routes). We have a tremendous police force in this town. Hats off to them.
