Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, a federal holiday that is also used by many as a day of service.
King is remembered for the role he played in standing up for civil rights by encouraging non-violent solutions. His "I Have a Dream" speech, given in 1963 during the March on Washington is among the signature moments of his lifetime.
On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 39. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January each year in honor of King's birthday, which was January 15.
