Letter to the Editor: Thank You From the Chocolate Truffle

Owner of the Chocolate Truffle Erin Calvo-Bacci thanks residents for their support and offers information regarding her fundraising efforts.

With the beginning of the new year, it feels like a nice time to thank everyone in the community who has supported The Chocolate Truffle throughout 2012. As participants in the annual Shop the Block event and supporters of the national Buy Local initiative, we thank everyone who chose to spend their shopping dollars in Reading, and particularly at our store. And, we are proud to say, we were able to give back to the community we live and work in through our Fundraising Days Partnership Program.

Through our Fundraising Days Partnership Program, we were able to contribute $681 last year, with $241.68 going to Understanding Disabilities. Our 2012 partners included Friends of Reading Public Library, The Purpose School of Stoneham, the Bass River Tennis Club event to support Mass General Hospital, J.W. Killam Elementary School, Wakefield Girls Softball, Creative Arts, Parker Middle School PTO, Special Olympics of Massachusetts, St. Athanasius Church in Reading, and the community of Sandy Hook.

We would like to invite you to join us in giving back to our community through our Fundraising Days program. Any local non profit organization can take part. Pick a designated day or week and send a news blast to everyone on your mailing list to shop at that designated time, either in person, online, or by phone.  When a customer mentions your organization during the transaction, we will set aside the receipt. All receipts will be tallied at the end of the designated time period, and 15 percent of the tally will be presented in a check to your group’s representative.

According to Jean Clark of the Friends for Reading Public Library, “The networking between the shops and the Friends made it a very successful venture for both. Having additional events...is a chance to build the funds that will aid us in funding the many programs such as the children’s summer reading program, museum passes to 16 area museums, Live Wires senior program, a music concert series, toddler sing-a-longs, young adult author visits, and staff day programs. Money for these programs do not come from town government or taxes, so the money raised really enhances the library for all.”

Heidi O’Connor of Understanding Disabilies said, “We are very fortunate to be part of a caring community with many volunteers which keep UD alive and serving the adults of tomorrow.”
