Oleana's Owner Comes to Somerville to Take Over the Former Paddock Restaurant

The new restaurant will likely feature mezze and a full bar, and it could open this summer, according to Chowder, a food blog.

Ana Sortun, owner and chef of Cambridge's highly acclaimed Oleana and Sofra Bakery and Cafe, is coming to Somerville.

Boston Magazine's "Chowder" blog reports that Sortun will take over the space formerly occupied by The Paddock at 249 Pearl St. The Paddock, which had a according to one reader, closed in July.

Chowder reports the new restaurant will be a joint venture with Sortun and Oleana's chef de cuisine, Cassie Piuma, who will be a partner and executive chef at the Somerville location.

Piuma has previously worked at Sel de la Terre, Gourmet Caterers and The Butcher Shop, according to Oleana's website.

Sortun told Chowder the new Somerville restaurant will fit somewhere between Oleana and Sofra. "It will be more of a mezze restaurant and bar,” she told the food blog.

The atmosphere will be relaxed and it will have a full bar, Chowder says.

The new restaurant doesn't have a name yet, but it could open by this summer, according to the blog.

I doubt it's super connected. Oleana has done great and is not particularly close to mass transit. It's actually in a bit of deadzone between Kendall and Inman. It does well because fancy enough and good enough that folks get reservations and make it a destination. In fact, I heard Oleana used as an example of why Posto on Elm Street — an upscale restaurant in a spot between squares that has proved very difficult for restaurants in the past — would be able to succeed where cheaper places have failed.

Joe, I can see where you're going with this, but I find it a little too early, no?

I hope the prices are more like Sofra's than Oleana's!

This is a great thing to happen to this neighborhood. Let's make sure we do everything we can support this effort.
