Hurricane Irene on Her Way Up the Coast

Hurricane Irene, a large Category 3 hurricane, is on her way up the coast. Expect to see the effects this weekend.
Residents have been buying extra water, batteries and flashlights in preparation for the storm.
North Reading resident Joan Crowley went to on Main Street to buy batteries on Thursday. She'll use them for her flashlights and radio if power is lost.

Employee at True Value Charlie Whittier said, "I've already fixed three flashlights. One guy wanted 12 sheets of plywood to cover big windows."
Whittier said patrons have mostly been buying batteries and flashlights, but one customer did inquire about a generator.
