Library Receives Grant to Help Resident Experience the Digital Age

Reading Public Library is the recipient of a federal grant worth $8,000.

During the "digital age," libraries are no longer only about books. And now, thanks to a federal grant, Reading Public Library will be learning some new tricks to keep up with ever changing technology.

According to a press release, the library was recently awarded a Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant worth $8,000.

Library Circulation Division Head Michelle Filleul was the project director for the grant, which was proposed as "The Customer Experience in the Digital Age."

With the funding, the library will be able to provide advanced staff training in customer service in new and emerging technologies, according to the press release.

Specifically, public events are planned for Reading residents that include an eReaders program, a technology petting zoo night, and later in the year a program focused on apps.

Each library staff member will learn more on relevant topics from an instructor from Northern Essex Community College. Throughout the year, employees will develop their skills in computer applications, website design, iPad apps and specialized library applications.

According to the press release, the library grant runs from October 2013 through September 2014. The money was awarded to Reading Public Library by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

"In recent years, the library has completed grants that enhance services to the public and expand library programming for all ages," the press release said. "Grants such as 'Science Is Everywhere,' Teens and Tweens, How Green is My Library, LINKS Online at the Library, and Community Languages Grant, have provided funds to better serve the community, grow collections, and develop and deepen professional skills that are essential in a fast-changing environment."
