Mike Boyd Open Raises Money to Fight Lung Cancer

The third annual Mike Boyd Open was held last Friday.  alums have raised more than $30,000 in the last three years for lung cancer research in memory of their friend, RMHS athlete and coach Mike Boyd.

Boyd, a non-smoker, passed away in 2009 at age 29 from lung cancer. Boyd played football at RMHS while he was a student and went on to play at Bentley University. After college, Boyd worked as a pharmaceutical representative and returned to RMHS as an assistant football coach.  

According to a recent press release, this year's tournament, held at the  was sold out.

“We are so thankful to the entire community for the support.  Year-over-year we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown from those who knew Mike (both near and far).  We have even received letters from people who have never met Mike, but were inspired by his story and adopted his “Don’t Quit’’ attitude to tackle challenges in their own lives.  It has been an incredible three years and it means a lot to us that so many people come together each year to celebrate Mike's life and keep his memory alive,” Event Organizer Erica Kirwan said.

The funds from the were split between The Reading Scholarship Foundation, Front Row Foundation, the Lung Cancer Alliance and the Mike Boyd Foundation. The Mike Boyd Foundation, started by Boyd's family, is a registered 501c3 charity. All of the funds raised last Friday will be donated directly to the Mike Boyd Foundation.
