Pair of RMHS Students Given Academic and Community Award

The students were recognized for their hard work in and out of classroom.

During last week's Town Meeting, Superintendent of Schools John Doherty announced that two Reading Memorial High School seniors were awarded the 2013 Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Award for Academic and Community Excellence.

According to a press release from the district, the award is given annually to two students who have a strong three-year cumulative grade point average, participate in extracurricular and community service activities and are currently in the top five percent of their graduating class.

David Rubin and Julia Sidman were chosen for the award as both are active in a long list of teams and clubs.

Rubin runs on the Rocket cross country, winter track, and spring track team and will be the team captain for the latter two squads. Rubin currently serves in several other leadership roles including Vice President for the National Honor Society, Vice President for Student Council, and the Treasurer for the Leo Club, and has applied to schools that include Stanford University. Rubin hopes to major in mechanical or chemical engineering.

Sidman holds leadership positions of her own as  Vice President of the Senior Class and Vice President of the Spanish National Honor Society. During the Drama Club's production of Legally Blonde, Sidman played the role of Enid. The senior, who is currently taking several Advanced Placement classes, has applied to Tulane University and Vanderbilt University, and hopes to study international relations or environmental science.
