Padres making noise with two big wins in Week Three RBRL action

The defending NL champs made a strong statement (don’t sleep on the Padres) in week three with wins over the undefeated Phillies and the pre-season favorite Astros.  In the 3-1 Phillies win the Padres used the depth of their staff to hold the Phils to one run, with Troy Anderson, Jack Walsh, Ryan Talbot and closer Cary Thabet all having a turn. The Padres followed that win with a highlight filled victory over the dangerous Astros in their Sunday makeup.  In the 7-3 win the same pitchers contributed off the mound but they also received good contributions at the plate and in the field.  Sam Hunter-Creane, Nate Lemons and Harrison Fiscus had hits in a five-run outburst with Anderson bringing three home with a triple. Rookie Ryan Sullivan had knocked in the first two runs of the game with a single in the first. In the field Walsh threw a runner out at home from left field and Lemons and Talbot turned a double play in the middle infield.

The Phillies bounced back from their first loss by no-hitting the Pirates in a 8-0 win, which was their third shutout win on the season.  AJ Ucci (see below) pitched the first six with Erik Bonnebeau closing out the combined no-hitter. Zack Sahagian had two hits. The Pirates had their highlight win of the season defeating the Angels 9-7 on Sunday. Thirteen year-old Brendan Donovan did a solid job in four innings off the mound and his brother Sean was on-base four times with two hits.  Two other rookies, Alejandro Vaquerano and James Henry made notable fielding plays. The Marlins beat the Astros for the second time this season by the score of 5-2. The Marlins hurlers Mike Cavaliero, Andrew Bruckner and John Guiliotti struck out 13 ‘Stros on the day. Anthony Vacarri had a two run single and several good defensive plays were made including Bruckner, Michael Malley and Nick Burpee.

In the AL, the Angels put the only blemish on the Padres week with a shutout win. The Halos got a boost on the mound from Enzo Galletta and first timer Will Sabatino for the first five innings then Joe Bradley struck out five of the last six batters to bring home the 6-0 win.  Pat Conroy and Kevin Joos had doubles to add to seven other Angels hits.  Earlier in the week , they took town their chief AL rival White Sox for the second time behind strong pitching from Graham Boudette and two hit games from Adam Joos and Cole Pappalardo. The Royals had a big 12-4 Sunday win over the A’s. The Royals scored eleven runs over the final three innings and had a season-high eleven hits on the day. Rookie John DiMare had two hits and a long triple while driving in two runs.  Matt Starble got the win off the mound with DiMare limiting damage in the sixth in relief before the Royals put the game away late. Ryan Fargo had two hits and Chris Fallon had a timely two-run two-out single that provided the winning runs in a tie game.  The Mariners had a two-win week starting with a close win over the A’s in which Matt Lenox threw well off the mound and Matt Panacopoulos had a three-run triple. They closed out the week with a romp over the Marlins with Danny Tighe going the route and Andreas Paglia and Corey Ward the hitting stars.
