But did it come in more than black? On this day in 1972, the Volkswagen Beetle overtook the Ford Model T as the best selling automobile of all time. What began as a mandate from Adolf Hitler for an affordable “peoples’ car” became a success in the U.S when an advertising agency billed the Beetle’s small size as an advantage. After it ceased production early last decade, it left two living legacies.: first, the less affordable and more stylish “New Beetle;” second, the enduring market for small cars like mine.
