I would like to take a moment to not only to congratulate the winners of our Town Election, but also to say thank you to ALL the candidates who ran. Running for public office is not an easy thing to do. Putting yourself and family in the public spotlight is stressful and truly an arduous undertaking. Be proud of what you did and be proud that you took a chance to stand up and fight for our Town.
All the candidates did such a great job that they brought out more than 3,000 voters to the polls, just about 19.5% of all the registered voters in Town. That is truly an accomplishment! When I ran for school committee back in 2009 just under 4% of the voters came out to vote. It seems like a sleeping giant in Wilmington has finally been awakened and I look forward to future elections in Town and seeing more and more people participating in the political process.
On that note, this Saturday April 30, the Town of Wilmington will be having its annual Town Meeting starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilmington High School gymnasium. Open Town Meeting is the purest form of democracy. It gives you the voter the opportunity to directly challenge your political leaders and voice your opinion on the important issues facing our Town today. So many towns these days are doing away with open town meetings due to the lack of participation. Don’t let this happen to Wilmington, put aside the yard work for one day and come out and let your voices be heard.
