Suspected Child Abuser Burbine to be Arraigned Wednesday

John Burbine of Wakefield to be arraigned Wednesday morning at Woburn Superior Court on nearly 95 child sex abuse charges.

The Wakefield man at the center of one of the worst child sex abuse cases in recent memory will be arraigned Wednesday morning at Woburn Superior Court.

Burbine, 49, faces a total of 95 charges stemming from the alleged abuse of children receiving day care or tutoring services from his wife's business - which was not completely registered.

Marian Burbine, 46, will make her own court appearance on Dec. 20 for a pre-trial hearing. She faces six counts of reckless endangerment of a child, and two counts of operating an unlicensed day care business.

Mrs. Burbine has reportedly been under house arrest in Wakefield while a MyFoxBoston report noted over the weekend that her husband is currently in the Billerica House of Corrections.

The District Attorney's office has charged Burbine with sexually abusing 13 children over the past couple of years, although investigators have urged any other victims or those with relevant information to come forward. The case has also resulted in considerable scrutiny of the state's sex offender classification system. Burbine was a level 1 sex offender stemming from a 1989 conviction, noted DA Gerry Leone last week at his press conference announcing the charges. A Boston Herald report over the weekend noted that Burbine had faced three counts of indecent assault on a child under 14 and served a six month sentence.

From there, a more recent article from the WCVB Boston website spoke to the mother from that case, who told the news outlet that Burbine was hired to care for three sons aged 2 through 6 after claiming to be a college student studying early childhood education. The report adds that his previously mentioned sentence was part of a so-called Alford plea admitting to sufficient evidence for guilt, and actually included the condition that he stay away from children.
