Independence Day Brings Many Illegal Fireworks Calls

The following information was supplied by the Reading police department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is a look at some of the calls handled by the Reading Police Department from Thursday through Sunday. The information is open to the public.

Thursday, July 4

  • At 8:22 a.m. a call came in for a man who appeared to be confused. There was a possible liver issue with the patient.
  • At 10:09 a.m. on Walkers Brook Drive near Starbucks, a resident told police a dog was locked in a car with the window barely opened.
  • At 12:27 p.m. a driver told dispatch that a bunch of doors were dumped on the side of the road on Eaton Street.
  • At 2:45 p.m. the Reading Police Department opened the community room for residents in need of relief from the heat.
  • At 3:34 p.m. a man was reported passed out in the back yard of a Grove Street home.
  • At 6:57 p.m. residents on Pleasant Street were allegedly setting off fairly large fireworks. Police fielded a second call about 10 minutes later for someone doing the same on Longfellow Road. Throughout the night, calls also came in for fireworks being set off on Main Street, Pratt Street, Pearly Street, Colburn Road and Pleasant Street.

Friday, July 5

  • At 5:49 a.m. flowers were reported taken from a window box on Haven Street.
  • At 12:22 p.m. vandalism less than $250 was reported to a home on Longview Road. 
  • At 8:54 p.m. fireworks were reported in the area of Boyce Street. Then at 10:20 p.m. more fireworks were called in along with yelling in the area of Whitehall Lane.

Saturday, July 6

  • At 8:30 a.m. a syringe was found on Harrison Street.
  • At 9:04 a.m. police received a call for an unarmed bank robbery at TD Bank on Main Street. The man slipped the teller a note and allegedly demanded money. He left the area with $6,000.
  • At 11:52 a.m. a worker struck the gas line while digging on Pond Meadow Drive.
  • At 1:57 p.m. a resident on Red Gate Lane reported the flag from the front of their home was stolen.
  • At 8:28 p.m. on Spring Street a man reported that the bed liner was stolen out of his pick up truck.

Sunday, July 7

  • At 11:40 a.m. a resident on Elm Street came home and found a boot print on his door and suspected a breaking and entering attempt.
