Police Conduct Alcohol Checks at Reading Businesses

Out of 23 businesses tested, only one failed to ask for identification from minors seeking to buy alcohol, the Daily Times Chronicle reported.

The Reading Police Department recently issued a test for local establishments. And all but one earned passing marks.

According to a recent report in the Daily Times Chronicle, the Reading Police Detective Unit conducted alcohol compliance tests to 23 businesses in town last month.

During the test, underaged patrons entered various businesses and attempted to buy alcohol. To pass the compliance check, businesses had to ask for identification, at which point the underage participant would leave, the Daily Times Chronicle reported.

Among the 23 businesses in Reading, which varied from restaurants to liquor stores to the American Legion, Meadow Brook Golf Club was the only one to sell alcohol to the minor. As a result, the newspaper reported that Meadow Brook will be referred to the Board of Selectmen for a public hearing.

According to the Daily Times Chronicle, the average compliance rate in Reading from 2008-2013 is 90 percent.
