Police Log: Cars Scratched, Entered, Broken Into and Robbed

2:24 a.m. A High Street resident reported seeing a group of four youths attempting to steal a street sign from the intersection of High Street and Middlesex Avenue. An officer checked the area and could not locate the youths.

2:58 a.m. An officer responded to a fire alarm at the Belmont Arms complex on Main Street and found that it had been set off by a cooking-related problem in the basement.

6:43 a.m. A Department of Public Works employee reported finding the door to a shed at Laurel Hill Cemetery pried open. The worker reported nothing missing from inside the shed.

8:31 a.m. A Reading resident reported seeing a man that may have been drinking while driving near Salon Muffie on Main Street. An officer located the man, who displayed no signs of intoxication.

10:05 a.m. A Washington Street resident reported that someone entered her vehicle and stole a GPS, phone charger and iPod adaptor. Her vehicle was unlocked.

10:15 a.m. North Reading police reported seeing a man skateboarding down the center line of Rt. 28. Reading police were unable to locate the man.

11:03 a.m. An officer responded to a report of a man with a battery attached to a plastic bag near 30 Haven Street. The officer found that the man was a contractor measuring vibrations from the construction site to ensure nearby foundations weren’t being damaged.

12:35 p.m. An officer issued a citation to Ordonez Delacruz, 38, of Chelsea, charging him with driving without a license.

1:10 p.m. An officer responded to a report of hypodermic needles found on the ground near the intersection of Rustic Lane and Haverhill Street. The officer found and disposed of two needles.

1:18 p.m. An officer responded to a report of a wolf walking around Charles Lawn Cemetery. The officer found that it was a coyote. The animal returned to the woods.

1:40 p.m. A Department of Public Works employee spotted an injured turkey at a Sunnyside Avenue residence. An officer found the animal, but could not shoot it. The homeowner said the turkey could stay.

2:28 p.m. A Batchelder Road resident reported that a large vehicle caused damage to the area when passing through the intersection of Batchelder Road and Haverhill Street. An officer found that the vehicle had knocked down cable wires and smashed a mailbox. A resident also reported that her vehicle had been damaged as a result of the falling wires.

2:41 p.m. Following a traffic stop near the intersection of Haverhill Street and Timberneck Drive, an officer arrested Walter Esteban-Niz, 24, of Lynn and charged him with driving without a license and giving the officer a false name.

5:40 p.m. A Canterbury Drive resident reported that someone broke into her locked vehicle and stole $40.

10:06 p.m. A Vermont resident reported that someone scratched her car with a key while it was parked at the Longhorn Steakhouse on Walkers Brook Drive.
