Two Prisoners Escaped Holding Facility in North Reading

The prisoners are now back in custody.

Around 7:17 a.m. Monday morning, two prisoners being held before their arraignment escaped from the holding facility, police said.

The two prisoners, Christian Giangrande, 22, of 29 Pleasant St. North Reading, and Justin Pelletier, 21, of 34 Linwood Ave. North Reading, "were able to take advantage of a breach in the locking mechanism of the holding cell door that allowed them to escape," police said in a recent press release.

Around 9 a.m., the two prisoners were located and placed back in custody, according to police. Both Giangrande and Pelletier will face additional charges of escape from a police lock-up. They will be arraigned Monday at Woburn District Court.

Giangrande and Pelletier were originally arrested on Saturday on charges of heroin possession. Giangrande was also arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for a probation violation.

Police are in the process of reviewing why the holding facility door was not secured properly. They will fix the situation, the release said, and ensure that it does not happen again in the future.
