Wakefield Man Killed, Brockton Woman Charged in Reading Crash

A woman faces OUI charges after striking and killing a 71-year-old man, according to police.

A 32-year-old Brockton woman is in police custody following a Tuesday night crash that police said killed a 71-year-old Wakefield resident.

According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers and Reading Police Officers were called to Route 95 in Reading at 8:50 p.m., and upon arrival they located a 71-year-old Wakefield man on the side of the road suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Police said that preliminary reports indicate that the man had pulled over and stopped in the breakdown lane. At that point, officers said he was struck by another motor vehicle. The man was taken to Lahey Clinic in Burlington, but did not survive his injuries.

It is unclear whether the man was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash or outside, and police will not know the complete circumstances until the accident reconstruction has been completed.

Following the incident, police arrested Mary Grigoriadis, 32, of Brockton, and charged her with operating under the influence of liquor. State Police said Grigoriadis faces additional charges in the fatal crash.

Grigoriadis will appear in Woburn District Court and is being held on $10,000 bail. Police have not yet identified the deceased man as they are working on next of kin notification.

Just before midnight on Tuesday night, police were still working on reconstructing the scene and two lanes of travel were closed. Police expect to have more information on the crash by Wednesday morning.
