By November of 1918, things were looking bleak for the Central Powers. Faced with massive unrest on the home front, mutiny within the Imperial Navy and a stalemate on the battlefield, Kaiser Wilhelm II was informed that he would no longer enjoy the support of the German General Staff against his internal enemies—who were rapidly multiplying. Wilhelm II agreed to abdicate his throne on Nov. 9, 1918. Shortly after, the last of the powerful Hohenzollern monarchs traveled from Spa to Holland, never again to set foot on German soil.
