Five Things, Including Johnson Woods Public Hearing

And an informal recital at RMHS.

1) Wait ... What? Sure, it’s December, and that usually means snow, but all the unseasonably temperate weather of late has lulled us into a false sense of Meteorological security. But no more. Weather Underground is calling for rain and snow showers in the morning, with some sun coming through later in the day. Highs will reach the low 40s and it will be windy. Expect temperatures to drop to the low to mid 20s this evening, but at least it should be dry.

2) Be heard. The Community Planning and Development Commission will meet tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall’s Board of Selectmen Meeting Room. This evening’s business is a continuation of the public hearing concerning Johnson Woods, Phase II. If you’d like to be heard on this matter, tonight’s the night and the CPDC meeting is the place.

3) Informal recital at RMHS. A group of RMHS students will be performing an this afternoon in the school’s Performing Arts Center. The event begins at 3 p.m. and will include classical and contemporary voice and instrumental pieces.

4) Calling all snowshoe enthusiasts. If the morning’s snow showers truly freak you out, then head over to for Snowshoes.com’s . This comprehensive workshop covers everything from beginner’s instruction to trip planning and how to find the best trails. All the essential tools and tricks will be covered and all in attendance will leave with a goody bag. All ages and experience levels welcome.

5) A terrible act. Today in 1980, a horrified world learns that beloved ex-Beatle John Lennon has been shot and killed only steps from the Dakota—the Manhattan building where he keeps an apartment with wife Yoko Ono—by deranged psychopath Mark David Chapman. Reportedly an obsessed fan, Chapman—who had obtained an autograph from Lennon earlier that day—fired four shots at close range with a .38 caliber revolver. Lennon passed away in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. In a testament to Lennon’s impact upon the era in which he lived, ABC’s Howard Cosell offered the following words during that night’s Monday Night Football game between the Patriots and the Miami Dolphins.

“Remember this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City: John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City, the most famous, perhaps, of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival.”
