North Reading Tax Bills to Increase in 2013

Find out how much your tax bill will increase next year.

If approved by the Department of Revenue, taxes will go up to $16.04 per thousand, which is quite an increase over last year's rate of $14.38 per thousand. The town will get confirmation on the rate from the Department of Revenue in December.

The average single family home value in North Reading is $452,400, Assessor Debbie Carbone said. The new tax bill for a home of that value will be approximately $7,256.

Taxes have increased over the last several years. Last year, the tax rate was $14.38 per thousand and $14 in the previous year. However, a large increase was expected for 2013 due to the school building project.

Members of the Board of Selectmen agree that a single tax rate is fair for the town going forward, so North Reading will maintain a single tax rate.

Tax bills are due Feb. 1.

Today's Transcript says it all. School project aleady 4.5 million over original allocated budget of 108 million. Why does this NOT surprise me. 11.4 percent tax rate increase/16.04 per thousand is only the beginning. Hang one for even higher taxes and more deception.

How can we allow a Paid Consulting Architec Design firm to make the mistakes they did in the new school design/plans? They should be held financially accountable for their mistakes OR the people who hired should. This is outrageous as the mistakes which will cost another 4 Million (in today's figures) and additional over runs which will also occur will keep going up. I guerss North reading wants their own Big Dig. Do Not vote any more overrides to pay for this incompetence.
