The Reading Police Department confirmed via its Twitter account just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday night that Superintendent of Schools John Doherty closed schools in advance of the storm.

"Schools Closed: Reading Public Schools will be closed on Thursday January 2nd and Friday January 3rd due to upcoming snowstorm," Reading Police tweeted at 7:52 p.m.

The two days off will extend winter break until Monday. Students had not yet returned from break as Thursday was slated to be the first day back.
