U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is coming to Reading.

He will visit the Arthur W. Coolidge Middle School on Wednesday for a roundtable discussion. Duncan is scheduled to visit several other schools, including Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School in Roxbury, Worcester Technical High School in Worcester, and Match Charter Public High School in Boston during a two-day visit to the Bay State.

"Secretary Duncan has chosen Reading as one of the places he is visiting while in Massachusetts because of Reading’s leadership with several state initiatives and its commitment to prepare students for college and career readiness," Reading school officials said in a statement. "These initiatives include our emphasis on the literacy and mathematics curriculum frameworks, educator collaboration in the development of district determined measures, the educator evaluation process, elementary standards-based report cards, technology integration, and a focus on 21st century skills ... We look forward to engaging in a meaningful dialogue that will benefit all educators and students, and we are honored to be hosting such an important opportunity for our district, our state, and our nation."

If citizens knew the way that Arne Duncan and his corporate cronies foisted this untested, inferior curriculum upon us they would not be looking forward to shaking his hand. They would run him out of town along with the Patrick administration who, in 2009, sold our children's superior curriculum for NCLB funds. The federal government's take-over of public education was not in any way "voluntary" it was extortion. Common Core has neutered our teachers, our administrators and our school boards. The very right to self government in the highly important issue of education has been handed over to corporate entities by way of the Gates foundation, Pearson, the Waltons and In bloom. All of whom are poised to make billions on this federal take over of public education. Educators absolutely where not involved in the development of this untested curriculum and where they were consulted on the final product they rejected it. It certainly must be a very basic human right to guide the education of our own children, yet, neither you, nor I, nor your local school board had anything to do with the development of Common Core curriuclum. Whether you send your child to public school, parochial school, private school or home school you will be subject to this "common" curriculum. Obama, Patrick, Gates, Pearson, Waltons, and In bloom have decided what is best for your children. Of course, none want it for their own.
