Mark Doherty's Rockets Stack Up With State's Best

The Reading High School boys hockey team is in the Super 8 thanks to the leadership of the coach who has been involved with the program since 1984.

Reading High School boys hockey head coach Mark Doherty has seen his team play some of the top team teams in the state and he's seen one thing. The Rockets stack up with all of them.

The fourth year mentor has been an assistant with the Rockets since 1984 when he graduated from the University of New Hampshire. He took over after his father retired as head coach in 2009.

Doherty's charges open their Super 8 series with Austin Prep on Sunday, reportedly at Lowell's Tsongas Center.

Mark sold me all my equipment out of Dynamic Sports back in the early 90's when I played youth hockey in Reading. If you want to understand how Reading makes the Super 8 year after year and produces so many division 1 college players, look no further than the Dohertys. When I was a kid Peter Doherty was the RMHS coach and was around Dynamic from time to time, Mark was the asst coach at RMHS and ran the day to day at the store, and Paul Doherty coached the Squirt A team. Since Dynamic sold all the gear, the Dohertys had a relationship with every kid who played hockey from age 5 on. By the time they got to high school, they knew the coaches for years already. And with Paul coaching the squirt team, the kids ran all the same plays the varsity did before they even knew how to check. You'd go to the Woburn rink (where the varsity home games were played before Burbank was built) and see Michael Sullivan run a successful rendition of the breakout play you just learned in practice. It's a true system and has worked for decades.
